Wahlberg, a recording artist, is known as the original member of the boy band New Kids on the Block.

Wahlberg's first film acting role was in the 1996 film Bullet with Mickey Rourke and Tupac Shakur. He appeared as a kidnapper in Ransom with Mel Gibson in 1996. He returned to his hometown for a small part in the South Boston-based film Southie. In the 1999 film The Sixth Sense, Wahlberg played the patient of Bruce Willis' character in the opening sequence.

Wahlberg co-starred Second Lieutenant C. Carwood Lipton in the television miniseries Band of Brothers in 2001. Joel Stevens, a Los Angeles police detective, appeared in the NBC drama series Boomtown from 2002 to 2003. Graham Yost, executive producer and writer of Boomtown, had worked with him in Band of Brothers and was so moved by his success that he wrote specifically for him.

In William Goldman and Lawrence Kasdan's adaptation of the Stephen King alien-invasion thriller, Dreamcatcher, Wahlberg starred Timothy Olyphant, Jason Lee, and his Band of Brothers co-star Damian Lewis as the physically challenged Duddits. In the second installment of the Saw franchise in 2005, he appeared as Detective Eric Matthews. He reprised his role in Saw III and Saw IV in 2006 and 2007, as well as appearing in Saw V in 2008 as an archive video from previous years.

Wahlberg played Lieutenant Commander Burton in Annapolis's military/boxing drama. He appeared in the short-lived television drama Runaway on The CW in September 2006.
