Richard Panoz (PAY-nohz; May 13, 1935 to September 11, 2018) was an American entrepreneur who established numerous pharmaceutical firms.
Early life
Panoz, an Italian-American, was a student at the University of On September Panoz. Eugene Panunzio, his father, immigrated to the United States from Avezzano, Italy, in the 1900s. Eugene, who shortened his surname from Panunzio to Panoz, was a champion featherweight boxer.
Panoz attended Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, West Virginia, where he met Nancy, whom he would later marry. After returning to the United States, the two men spent time in Japan with the United States Army before relocating to Pittsburgh.
Personal life and death
Panoz and his wife Nancy were married for 63 years. They had two sons, Danny and Chris, and four children, Dona, Dena, Lisa, and Andrea.
Panoz died of pancreatic cancer on September 11, 2018. He was 83 years old.
Business career
During college at Duquesne University, Panoz operated two drug stores in Pittsburgh. Panoz and Milan Puskar formed Milan Pharmaceuticals (which would later be renamed Mylan) in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in 1961. Panoz, the company's president, created time-release medication through a transdermal patch, which is most popular in today's market for nicotine patches.
Panoz left Mylan in 1969 when the company refused to expand the patch, and the family was relocated to Ireland, where he established Élan Corporation. Since being a market leader in drug delivery solutions and technology, this company has maintained worldwide coverage of the nicotine patch. Panoz gradually reduced his interest in the company, and Perpeto bought it in 2013.
In 1992, Don and Nancy Panoz founded Château Élan Winery & Resort in Braselton, Georgia. The couple still owned the resort at the time of Don's death in 2018, which has since expanded to 3,500 acres (14 km2). In 2004, the Panozes sold a part of their company to three affiliates. The Panozes built the Diablo Grande Winery and Resort in Patterson, California, 35 miles east of San Jose; later, they established the St. Andrews Bay Resort and Spa in Scotland. Fairmont Hotels and Resorts is now the Fairmont St Andrews, which has since been sold and is now run by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. These venues feature golf course layouts and collaborations by Bruce Devlin, Denis Griffiths, Jack Nicklaus, Gene Sarazen, and Sam Torrance.
He served as both the founder and chairman of HydroMentia, a water pollution control company, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Norcross, GA-based indoor LED display manufacturer NanoLumens.
He was also the proprietor of Panoz, LLC, which is located on 109. 30448, Hoschton, Georgia. He began making the 25th Anniversary Limited Edition Panoz Motorsports vehicle made exclusively in the United States in 2014.
