Personal life
Jennifer, Julie, and Matthew were Hastings' three children, along with his first wife, Nana. Hastings and his second wife, actress Leslie Denniston, whom he married in 1980 and with whom he has a daughter, Kate, live in upstate New York. Matthew's son has been involved in show business since 1999 as a writer, director, and producer.
Hastings was the younger brother of actor Bob Hastings, who died in June 2014.
Career
He was born in the Brooklyn borough of New York City on April 1, 1934, and spent his first years in the Bedford-Stuyvesant district. He began working in radio at the age of six as a member of the "Bus Bunny" chorus on the television show Coast to Coast on a Bus. He appeared in four Broadway plays from 1944 to 1948. Hastings appeared on the DuMont television series Captain Video, Captain Video, and His Video Rangers from 1949 to 1955. He portrayed one of television's first superheroes designed to appeal to children.
On the CBS soap opera The Edge of Night, Hastings appeared from 1956 to 1960 as Jack Lane. "Good Night" played Bob Hughes on As the World Turns from October 1960 to the show's end on September 17, 2010.
Hastings was the longest running actor in television serial history before being unable to perform until November 2010, shortly after As the World Turns ended. Hastings' costar Helen Wagner, who appeared on As the World Turns from April 2, 1956 to her death in May 2010, Guinness World Records said she held the non-continuous record from June 2, 1956 to her death in May 2010. Wagner left the cast or had only appeared on a recurring basis between 1981 and 1985.
Hastings has worked as both As the World Turns and Guiding Light as well as a screenwriter, and he also wrote dialogue for both As the World Turns and Guiding Light under the name J. J. Matthews.
