Dick York Life

Richard Allen York (September 4, 1928 – February 20, 1992) was an American radio, stage, film, and television actor.

He is best known for his appearance on ABC's Bewitched as the first Darrin Stephens.

Bertram Cates, a teacher, appeared in the film Inherit the Wind (1960), his best known motion picture role was as a teacher.

Early life

York was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Bernard York, a salesman and Betty, a seamstress. He grew up in Chicago, where a Catholic nun first noticed his vocal talent. He began his career as the star of CBS radio program That Brewster Boy at the age of 15. He also appeared in hundreds of other radio shows and instructional films before heading to New York City, where he appeared on Broadway in Tea and Sympathy and Bus Stop. In live television broadcasts, he performed with actors including Paul Muni and Joanne Woodward, and with Janet Leigh, Jack Lemmon, and Glenn Ford in films, including My Sister Eileen and Cowboy.

Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth were filming They Came to Cordura (1959), he sustained a permanent, disabling back injury. "Gary Cooper and I were propulsionling a handcar carrying several 'wounded' guys down [the] railroad track] in York," the man was described as "grace cooper and I." I was on the bottom of the handcar's teeter-totter system. As the boss yelled, 'cut!' I was just lifting the handle up.' As one of the 'wounded' cast members screamed for control, he reached up and grabbed the key. Now, rather than lifting the recommended weight, I was suddenly, jarringly, lifting his entire weight off the flatbed. The muscles on the right side of my back reacted. They just snapped and let loose. And that was the start of it all: the pain, the painkillers, heroin use, and the longing.

York's injury did not end his career right away. In 1960, a year after York's injury, Bertram Cates (modeled on John Thomas Scopes of "Monkey Trial" fame) appeared in the film version of Inherite the Wind.

In the ABC comedy-drama Going My Way (1962), York went on to star Gene Kelly and Leo G. Carroll. As Tom Colwell, who runs a secular youth center, York was cast in the series, which lasted one season.

York appeared in hundreds of episodes of now-classic television shows, including Justice, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Untouchables, Rawhide, The Americans, Father Knows Best, and CBS's The Twilight Zone and Route 66.

Bewitched star Erin Murphy, 60 - who played Tabitha on the 1960s TV series - gives RARE interview

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 21, 2024
Bewitched child star Erin Murphy has finally revealed her favorite Darrin, the role of the mortal father/husband famously played by two different actors on the beloved sitcom. Murphy, who charmed audiences as Tabitha, the magical daughter of witch Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) and Darrin Stephens, is now 60 and one of the last surviving original cast members of Bewitched, along with her twin sister Diane, with whom she shared the role. Over the years, fans have debated which Darrin - originally portrayed by Dick York and later by Dick Sargent - was the better fit for the role, and now Murphy is settling the debate.

Bewitched will be adapted into a children's animated series

At Sony Pictures Television, Bewitched's animated version of the classic sitcom Bewitched is in production. The project's details were announced by The Hollywood Reporter, and it was also announced that the new version of the program would be targeted at children. The film, which has since been turned into a film, has also been described by Sony Pictures Television-Kids Executive Vice President and general manager Joe D'Ambrosia as 'Hannah Montana meets Harry Potter.'

As she surprises Sunrise's presenter on stage, the bewitched child actress is unrecognizable

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 19, 2023
Earlier this month, one of the late '60s' most recognisable child stars made a surprise appearance at a pre-Oscars cabaret showcase in Hollywood. Erin Murphy, the young Tabitha Stephens of Bewitched, joined musician and TV host Nelson Aspen on stage for his show 'Welcome Home' at the Gardenia club in Los Angeles on March 9. The 58-year-old actress was invited to an impromptu Q&A with Aspen and Emmy Award-winning actress Carolyn Hennesy, who is best known for her long-serving role as Diane Miller in the soap opera GM. She performed a duet with Aspen of Bewitched's legendary theme song, written by Jack Keller and Howard Greenfield, on stage. Today Murphy, who is best known for her role as the magical daughter of a witch (Elizabeth Montgomery) and her mortal husband (Dick York, later replaced by Dick Sargent) in the ABC comedy, is one of only two living original actors from Bewitched, with the other being her twin sister Diane, who played Tabitha.
