Early life
York was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Bernard York, a salesman and Betty, a seamstress. He grew up in Chicago, where a Catholic nun first noticed his vocal talent. He began his career as the star of CBS radio program That Brewster Boy at the age of 15. He also appeared in hundreds of other radio shows and instructional films before heading to New York City, where he appeared on Broadway in Tea and Sympathy and Bus Stop. In live television broadcasts, he performed with actors including Paul Muni and Joanne Woodward, and with Janet Leigh, Jack Lemmon, and Glenn Ford in films, including My Sister Eileen and Cowboy.
Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth were filming They Came to Cordura (1959), he sustained a permanent, disabling back injury. "Gary Cooper and I were propulsionling a handcar carrying several 'wounded' guys down [the] railroad track] in York," the man was described as "grace cooper and I." I was on the bottom of the handcar's teeter-totter system. As the boss yelled, 'cut!' I was just lifting the handle up.' As one of the 'wounded' cast members screamed for control, he reached up and grabbed the key. Now, rather than lifting the recommended weight, I was suddenly, jarringly, lifting his entire weight off the flatbed. The muscles on the right side of my back reacted. They just snapped and let loose. And that was the start of it all: the pain, the painkillers, heroin use, and the longing.
York's injury did not end his career right away. In 1960, a year after York's injury, Bertram Cates (modeled on John Thomas Scopes of "Monkey Trial" fame) appeared in the film version of Inherite the Wind.
In the ABC comedy-drama Going My Way (1962), York went on to star Gene Kelly and Leo G. Carroll. As Tom Colwell, who runs a secular youth center, York was cast in the series, which lasted one season.
York appeared in hundreds of episodes of now-classic television shows, including Justice, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Untouchables, Rawhide, The Americans, Father Knows Best, and CBS's The Twilight Zone and Route 66.
