Early life
Guerrero was born in Passaic, New Jersey, to Colombian parents and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. She stayed in the United States at the age of 14 when her parents and older brother were deported back to Colombia after unsuccessfully obtaining legal citizenship. Guerrero has since been a vocal advocate for asylum reform.
Guerrero was born in Boston's Jamaica Plain and Roxbury neighborhoods after being taken in by other Colombian families. She attended Boston Arts Academy, a performing arts high school, where she worked in the music department. She loved performing with a jazz band, but she foresees pursuing political science and communications in college. She began working in a law office after college.
Guerrero, 24, decided to pursue a career in acting at age 24. Louie Bello's song "Faces" appeared in the music video that same year. She migrated to New York City in 2011 and studied acting at Susan Batson Studio, where she met her manager Josh Taylor.
Career
Guerrero was cast in Orange, Orange, New Black, in the role of Maritza Ramos, a Bronx-bred character with Colombian roots. She was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series at the 21st Screen Actor Guild Awards for season 2. At the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards and the 23rd Screen Actor Guild Awards, the cast was recognized for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series once more. She remained a regular performer on the show from season 5 to season 5. She returned from the last season in 2019.
Guerrero appeared on The CW's Jane the Virgin in 2014 and was cast in a recurring role. Guerrero was the female lead in CBS' television pilot for Super Clyde in February 2015, but the program was not selected for series. Guerrero appeared in season 2 of Superior Donuts in 2017. Guerrero has appeared in the films Emoticon (French and John), Peter and John, and Happy Yummy Chicken. She appeared in the films Beyond Control and The Godmother in 2018.
Guerrero wrote In the Country We Love: My Family Divided, a memoir about her parents being arrested and deported when she was 14 years old. Michelle Burford and Co. were the book's director, and Henry Holt and Co. were selected by CBS to be developed into a drama executive starring Jennie Snyder Urman and Paul Sciarrotta with Snyder as the showrunner. Guerrero had been expected to take the lead at the beginning. CBS decided not to go forward with the scheme in 2017, but Fox News picked it up. No pilot for the series has been ordered as of January 2018.
Guerrero also published My Family Divided, a memoir related to her earlier work but for younger children, following the release of In the Country We Love: My Family Divided. One of the main reasons she wanted to target a younger audience was because she felt like children who were in similar situations as her own. "I never read anything close to my story," she says in a Washington Post interview. There was no reference point at the time. "I felt totally alone."
Guerrero joined the cast of the DC Universe's Doom Patrol in July 2018. Jane is the youngest of the series. In 2019, the series debuted.
