Diane Brewster (March 11, 1931 – November 12, 1991) was an American television actress best known for her appearances in three distinct television series of the 1950s and 1960s: confidence trickster Samantha Crawford in Leave It to Beaver; and doomed wife Helen Kimble in The Fugitive, John Fucigud.

Early years

Phillip Sloan Brewster, a Missouri trial lawyer, was her mother, Geraldine (née Craddock); Paul's older brother, Phillip. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and attended Shawnee Mission High School. "Dissy" is the name given to her 1949 senior class yearbook. She was a Pep Club member, Class Secretary, Cheerleader, and Homecoming Queen Attendant. Brewster later studied liberal arts at Lawrence University of Kansas. She worked as a secretary at a radio station after her sophomore year at the university.

Personal life and death

Jabe Z. Walker, an oral surgeon from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, was married in California by Brewster. Dean C. Walker and Lynn D. Walker had a son and a daughter, Lynn D. Walker. Both children were born in Los Angeles. Jabe Z. Walker died in February 2013.

In 1991, a Brewster died of heart disease at the age of 60.

Around 1955, Brewster immigrated to Los Angeles from the Kansas City area. She started as MC for a youth radio station. Soon after, work in retail, fashion analysis, and even weather forecast followed.

Brewster appeared on The Ina Ray Hutton Show, a variety show on NBC television, in 1956.

Brewster's character on Maverick, a stunning gambling con artist who often alters a southern accent to impress authorities of her sanity, but she is also likable. In the third episode of Maverick, "According to Hoyle," Brewster first appeared in a 1956 episode of Cheyenne, "Dark Rider." "The Savage Hills" with Jack Kelly, "The Seventh Hand" with Garner, and the famous "Shady Deal at Sunny Acres" starring both Kelly and Garner are among her Maverick appearances. In an extensive interview with writer/producer and series creator Roy Huggins, her mother's maiden name was given to her character.

In 1957-1958 and 1980s television revivals, Brewster appeared on Miss Canfield on Leave It to Beaver. In four regular season episodes as Miss Simms, a secretary for a dairy company, and Brewster appeared in the show's pilot "It's a Small World" as Miss Simms, a secretary with a dairy company, and in four regular season episodes as Miss Canfield. "Diana Brewster" appears in Episode 1's credits, a mistake that was fixed in her second appearance in Episode 8. On the second season of Leave It to Beaver, Sue Randall was replaced by Sue Randall as "Miss Landers."

In 1957, she co-starred with George Montgomery in the Western film Black Patch, portraying his childhood and future love interest. In the episode "Runaway Train" of NBC's Cimarron City Western television series starring George Montgomery, on January 31, 1959, Brewster appeared Lisa Caldwell. Brewster appeared in The Young Philadelphians the year before, playing Paul Newman's mother. (Newman was six years older than her senior.)

She made almost fifty appearances in various television and film roles, including episodes of Crusader starring Brian Keith, Wanted: Dead or Alive with Steve McQueen, Tombstone Territory (as "Julie Dixon" in season 1 episode 33), Tales of Wells Fargo (as "Dr Alice") and Harbor Command with Wendell Corey. In 1959, she appeared in "Nobody's Child" as Ronald Reagan's girlfriend, and she played Marian Dell in the segment "Law of the Badlands" of the syndicated series Frontier Doctor starring Rex Allen.

In 1960, Brewster appeared in "Steamboat Willy" Vanderveer's book "The Islanders," 512-513 an hour-long adventure series set in the South Pacific, starring William Reynolds and James Philbrook. She played "The Lita Foladaire Story" in a Wagon Train episode with Ward Bond and silent film actress Evelyn Brent, in which Brewster's character was killed before the show's debut, but her portions of the tale were largely depicted in flashbacks.

In 1962, Brewster appeared on Empire and in "The Jealous Man" with Jack Elam; on The Dakotas with Raymond Burr; and on the premiere episode of Kentucky Jones (1964) with Dennis Weaver and Harry Morgan.

Helen Kimble, the murdered wife in The Fugitive, appeared in flashbacks many times, most notable in Episode 14, "The Girl from Little Egypt," which appeared on December 24, 1963. In a 1966 episode of Family Affair, she appeared in two episodes of Death Valley Days and in a 1968 edition of Ironside (1968). In four episodes of The New Leave It to Beaver, she appeared in four episodes.
