Dewa Budjana Life

I Dewa Gede Budjana (born August 30, 1963) is an Indonesian guitarist, songwriter, and composer.

He is the lead guitarist and songwriter of Gigi's band.

Budjana's style evolved to jazz as he got to know John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, Jeff Beck, John Abercrombie, Chick Corea, and Weather Report.

He formed "Squirrell," a local band, which was extremely popular in the local community in his early years.

Dewa Budjana has collaborated with many well-known guitarists, including Tohpati, Balawan, Ridho, Abdee Negara, and others throughout his Indonesian musical career.

In addition to his Indonesian musicians, he has worked with international musicians like Vinnie Colaiuta, John Frusciante, Peter Erskine, Jimmy Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, Antonio Sanchez, Joe Locke, Gary Husband, Jack DeJohnette, Bob Mintzer, and Guthrie Govan.

His ability to blend not only jazz and rock but also traditional Balinese style has made him one of Indonesia's best guitarists.

Early life

Budjana's passion and talent in music, especially guitar, has been strong since he was in an elementary school in Klungkung, Bali. Budjana's first teacher was a construction worker who lived nearby. He borrowed money from his grandmother to buy his first guitar. He prioritized guitar in his life and began to teach himself by performing rock songs. When Budjana migrated to Surabaya, East Java, where he took a classical music course and appeared in many of music performances, he became more enthusiastic about music. He moved to Jakarta to pursue a career as a professional musician after graduation. While there, Jack Lesmana, a jazz maestro and father of jazz singer Indra Lesmana, who taught Budjana the philosophy of jazz, was discovered.

Music life

Budjana's name was first heard in Surabaya's music scene in 1976, when he was thirteen. In 1981, he bought a "real" electric guitar (an Aria Pro II) and began to play with many different people. As he began to take inspiration from John McLaughlin of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chick Corea, Yes, Gentle Giant, Kansas, Tangerine Dream, American Garage, Pat Metheny, and Allan Holdsworth, his musical style progressed slowly from pop rock to jazz.

Budjana formed Squirrel, his first jazz band, in Surabaya, in 1980. Squirrel appeared in a variety of national music festivals, including the Light Music Competition in 1984 at Teater Terbuka, TIM, Indonesia. Although many contestants participated, it was Budjana and his bandmates who outperformed the competition and gained. Budjana decided to fly to Jakarta to extend his musical career a year after that. This tour brought him to Jack Lesmana, an Indonesian jazz legend who introduced him to other professional musicians.

Although Jack offered Budjana with a variety of instruments in Indonesia, it was Indra who first encouraged him to become a session singer. Budjana joined the band Spirit, which also included Baron, Gigi's former guitarist. Spirit, Budjana, released one self-titled album before Budjana left the band and joined Java Jazz. He appeared in many other bands, including Jimmy Manopo Band, Erwin Gutawa's Big Band, and Twilite Orchestra, as well as the North Sea Jazz Festival, a world jazz festival in The Hague, the Netherlands.

Gigi, Baron's guitar, Thomas (bass), Armand (vocal), and Ronald (drums). Since then, Gigi has had six albums released. Nusa Damai; Gitarku; Samsara; and Home, a tribute album to the December 2004 tsunami victims, has also released his own solo albums: Nusa Damai; Gitarku; Samsara; and Home.

Moonjune Records released Dawai in Paradise and Joged Kahyangan in 2013. "I am attempting to marry the ethnic roots of my native Bali and my country Indonesia," Dewa said of his music, which is a strange blend of many cultural and ethnic influences.

Dewa Budjana is planning a museum dedicated to his painted guitars as well as other guitars from top international guitarists, such as Steve Vain, Greg Howe, John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Guthrie Govan, Jason Becker, John Scofield, Steve Morse, and many more. The museum is located in Bali, Indonesia.
