Early life
Aoki was born in 1982 in New York City. She grew up in Malibu, California, and attended high school at The American School in London.
Hiroaki Aoki's father was a former wrestler and Benihana restaurant magnate, and her mother, Pamela Hilburger, a jewelry designer. Her father was Japanese, and her mother is of German and English origins. She began modeling when she was 13, the same year her godmother introduced her to Kate Moss. She has an older sister and a younger brother, as well as four half-siblings, including Steve Aoki. Aoki Nu's aunt is also a model.

Aoki walked for Balenciaga, Comme des Garçons, and Chanel on her runway debut in 1997. Aoki made Naomi Campbell the face of Versace in 1998, at the age of 16. She has also appeared in advertisements for Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Kenzo, Hugo Boss, L'Oreal, Lancome, and Tiffany & Co., as well as walking for designers including Versace, Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Diane von Furstenberg, Baby Phat, and Marc Jacobs.
Aoki has appeared on many international fashion magazines, including USA' Ocean Drive, Vegas, Nylon, i-D, Interview, Elle Girl, and UK's Wonderland; Mexico's Cosmo Girl; Australia's Jalouse; and Malaysia's Her World. In addition, Aoki has appeared on the front pages of Vogue (Germany, Russia, Japan, Korea), and Numéro (Tokyo).
