Devlet Bahçeli (born 1 January 1948) is a Turkish politician who has served as the chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) in Ankara from 1996 to 1987.
He was elected in the province of Osmaniye and has served as an MP in Turkey's Grand National Assembly since July 22, 2007.
Early life
Devlet Bahçeli was born in Bahçe, a rural district of Osmaniye, on January 1, 1948. Bahçeli belonged to a long-established Turkmen family named "Fettahoullar," and he is one of his four children, with two siblings from his father's first marriage. Salih Bahçeli, his father, was one of Osmaniye's most popular farmers and merchants. Samiye was his mother's name. Devlet's father grew up in a left-wing family and served as a patron of sme nönü and the Republican People's Party. Despite Bahçeli's fervently anti-Armenian views, several sources claim he has some Armenian ancestry.
Education
He completed his primary education at 7 Ocak Primary School in Osmaniye, his hometown. In Adana Private University ukurova College, Devlet and his elder brother Servet went to secondary school. He and his relatives were in stanbul for his high school education and enrolled in Emirgan Akgün College. Bahçeli enrolled in Private Ata College in Etiler in his second year of high school and received his high school diploma from this institution. He was accepted into Gazi University in 1967 and graduated from its Foreign Trade Department in 1971.
In 1972, Bahçeli served as an assistant in the department of economics at Gazi University and two affiliated high schools. He was one of the founders and Chairman of the Association of University Academy and Schools Assistants (UMID-BIR) during this period, and he was one of the founding members and chairman of the National Association of Finance and Economists. He founded and was the founder of the University Academy and Schools Assistantship Association (ÜNAY). He earned his doctorate in economics from the Gazi University Institute of Social Sciences and continued lecturing in the department of economic policy at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of the same university from 1987 to 1987. While studying for his degree, Dr. Bahçeli was also interested in Turkish history, economics, and foreign policy.
Early political career
Bahçeli attended Alparslan's seminars as youth, chairman of the Republican Villagers Country Party, and predecessor to the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). He began and directed the Grey Wolves while still a student at Gazi University in 1967. Between 1970 and 1971, he served as the General Secretary of the National Turkish Students' Union.
Following the 1980 coup, Bahçeli defended executives and members of the MHP and other nationalist organisations that had been detained. Bahçeli resigned from his teaching position in 1987, after Türkeş requested his participation in national politics, and he was elected General Secretary of the Nationalist Task Party (MP) in their 1987 congress. Bahçeli served in various positions in MP and MHP's upper echelons at various times.
