Deryk Engelland Career

Playing career

Engelland played five seasons of junior hockey for the Moose Jaw Warriors in the Western Hockey League (WHL). He appeared in two games from 1998-99 before being named as a regular defenceman for the team in the following four seasons, where he reached 17 points in 2001–02 and 199 penalty minutes in 2002–03. In the sixth round, 194th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, the New Jersey Devils selected Engelland, but never participated with the club. He played for in 2003–04 and split between the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL and the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League, a division of the AHL.

Engelland, who is back in Las Vegas, played the entire 2004-05 season in the ECHL, scoring 5 goals, 16 assists, and had 138 penalty minutes. He spent the next several seasons in alternating between the ECHL and AHL. The South Carolina Stingrays and Hershey Bears were split in 2005–06, as well as Hershey and the Reading Royals' following year. The Pittsburgh Penguins, who signed him to a deal, were captivated by his play with Hershey in the 2007 Calder Cup playoffs. Engelland played for all 80 regular season games before adding 23 more in the playoffs as the team advanced to the Calder Cup final. In 2008–09, he appeared in all 80 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Engelland continued his streak of 171 after playing for his first recall to Pittsburgh in 2009 during the 2009-10 season.

Engelland, 27, made his NBA debut against the Boston Bruins on November 10, 2009, after more than six years in the minor leagues. He appeared in nine games with Pittsburgh and earned two assists. He was in 71 games and scored 11 points with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Engelland lauded the Penguins for their efforts to develop his physical defense skills; he played his first full NHL season in 2010–11. Engelland played in 63 games for the Penguins and scored his first NHL goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning on November 12, 2010. The Penguins signed Engelland to a three-year contract extension from 2013 to 2014, which paid him an average of $566,700 per season.

Engelland appeared in 73 games for Pittsburgh in his second season, 2011-12, winning 4 goals and 13 assists. Engelland opted to join Rosenborg IHK in Norway's GET-ligaen as a labour dispute delayed the start of the 2012-2013 NHL season. He appeared in 15 games for Rosenborg, where he scored 9 points before returning to Pittsburgh as the NHL resumed operations. Engelland had 6 assists in 42 games with the Penguins.

Engelland recorded a career high of six goals (and six assists) in his fourth NHL season, 2013–14, in a campaign where the Penguins only played him at forward. Engelland, despite being a regular in the Penguins' line-up, was often used in a limited capacity.

Following the season, Engelland decided to leave the Penguins and signed a three-year, $8.7 million deal with the Calgary Flames, where he hoped to have more involvement with the rebuilding team. The job was for $2.9 million per season, a five-fold increase over his previous salary, which was criticized as one of the worst value contracts signed during the 2014 free agency period.

However, Engelland was made alternate captain of the Flames in the absence of Troy Brouwer, who was on injured reserve with a broken finger, at the start of 2017.

Engelland was left hanging at the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft after the 2016-17 season, his third season with the Flames. The Vegas Golden Knights selected Engelland, a Las Vegas resident, on June 21, 2017. Engelland signed the Golden Knights for one-year, $1 million, marking his return to professional hockey in the area. Engelland was signed by the Golden Knights to a one-year, $1.5 million contract from January 15, 2018. Engelland was selected by the Knights for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy on April 23, 2018, as a player who best exemplifies leadership skills and gives back to his families. Engelland was also a finalist for the Mark Messier Leadership Award, which he received on June 20.

The Golden Knights re-signed Engelland to a one-year, $700,000.000 contract extension on July 23, 2019.

Engelland, the original member of the Golden Knights for three seasons, has announced his retirement from professional hockey after 11 years on December 22, 2020. He will continue with the Golden Knights in transitioning to the club's Foundation and serving as the Special Assistant to the Owner.
