Derrick LeRon Williams (born May 25, 1991) is an American professional basketball player for Fenerbahçe of the Turkish Basketball Super League and the EuroLeague.

He was selected with the second overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2011 NBA draft.

College career

Williams was originally intended to play at the University of Southern California. He was snapped up by University of Arizona's first-year head coach Sean Miller.

Williams averaged 15.7 points (7th in the Pact) and 7.1 rebounds (6yj) per game, finishing in 12th in the NCAA as a freshman in 2009-10 and fifth in the Pac-10. He was named both a freshman and the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year.

Freshman year honors:

Williams came to national prominence in his sophomore year. He averaged 19.5 points (2nd in the Pac-10) and 8.3 rebounds (4th) per game. Williams had a 595 field goal percentage in the 2011 season (tops in the Pac-10; 9th in the NCAA). He led the NCAA in True Shooting percentage (.690) and Effective Field Goal percentage (.650), leading the Arizona Wildcats basketball team to the PAC-10 championship for the first time in the regular season. Williams was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year by the University.

Williams also participated in the 2011 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, supporting the Wildcats. With fewer than 2 seconds against Memphis, he made a critical block. He made a 3-point play against the Texas Longhorns, which helped the Wildcats advance to the Sweet 16 of the tournament. Williams finished with 32 points and 13 rebounds to lead Arizona in an upset win over the #1-seeded Duke by a 16-point margin and into the Elite Eight, where they defeated Connecticut 63-6. He was expected to be one of the top picks for the forthcoming NBA draft at the end of the season.

Sophomore year honors:

Professional career

On April 13, 2011, Williams declared that he would register for the NBA draft. In the 2011 NBA draft, he was selected with the Timberwolves' second overall pick. He stayed at the University of Arizona for the summer to finish his degree during the NBA lockout of 2011. Under Armour signed an endorsement contract with Williams just short of the publication. During the summer of 2011, Williams appeared alongside several other NBA players for an exhibition game in the Philippines.

Williams competed in the 2012 Rising Stars Challenge as well as the 2012 NBA All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest. In a victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on February 28, 2012, Williams scored a season-high 27 points on February 28, 2012. He took 9 of ten shots from the field and 4 of 4 from three-point range. He led the Timberwolves to victory over the New Orleans Hornets with what was then a career-high 28 points.

Williams was traded to the Sacramento Kings for forward Luc Mbah a Moute on November 26, 2013. In a 104-96 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on November 29, 2013, he made his debut on November 29, 2013, finishing with 12 points (on 6-for-13 shooting), six rebounds, and four assists. In a victory over the Dallas Mavericks on December 9, 2013, Williams scored a career-high 31 points.

In a 122–109 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in the Kings' 2014–15 season finale, Williams scored a season-high 22 points on April 15, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers.

Williams signed with the New York Knicks on July 9, 2015. In the team's season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks on October 28, he made his debut for the Knicks on October 28, scoring a game-high 24 points in a 122–97 victory. In a 120-114 victory over the Boston Celtics on January 12, 2016, he scored his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. In a loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday, he tied his career high of 31 points.

Williams signed with the Miami Heat on July 10, 2016. After appearing in 25 games, the Heat waived him on February 6, 2017.

Williams signed a 10-day deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers on February 9, 2017. Williams played 22 minutes in his debut in Cleveland's 118-109 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday, going 3-for-3 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. On February 22, he began a second 10-day contract, followed by a rest-of-season deal on March 4. The Cavaliers advanced to the 2017 NBA Finals, where they were defeated by the Golden State Warriors in five games.

Williams signed with the Chinese Basketball Association on December 28, 2017. Williams averaged 20.0 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.7 steals per game in 15 Tianjin games between early January and early February.

Williams agreed to a 10-day deal with the Los Angeles Lakers on March 9, 2018. The Lakers decided to part with him after his deal came to an end.

Williams and Bayern Munich of the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) and the EuroLeague signed Williams from October 3, 2018-19 season. Williams averaged 13.4 points (9th in the EuroLeague) and 4.2 rebounds in 29 games, placing 9th in the EuroLeague with a.794 free throw percentage. Williams defeated Alba Berlin in the BBL Championships after beating Bayern in the BBL Finals.

Williams had signed a one-year contract with Fenerbahçe on July 18, 2019.

Williams signed with Valencia Basket of the Spanish Liga ACB on July 8, 2020.

Williams signed a one-year deal with Maccabi Tel Aviv of the Israeli Basketball Premier League and the EuroLeague on June 30, 2021. He had 9.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. Williams officially departed with the Israeli club on June 28, 2022.

Williams signed a one-year deal with Panathinaikos of the Greek Basket League and the EuroLeague on July 15, 2022.
