Derek Mears (born April 29, 1972) is an American actor and stuntman.

He appeared in horror and science-fiction books often, but it was in the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th that he came to fame for portraying Jason Voorhees.

The Hills Have Eyes 2 (2007), Predators (2010), Pirates of the Caribbean (2012), Hansel & Gretel: The Hills Have Eyes (2012), and Alita: Battle Angel (2019).

He portrayed the title character in the series Swamp Thing (2019).

Life and career

Mears was born in Bakersfield, California. At ComedySportz in Bakersfield, he performed improv comedy. In 1990, he graduated from Highland High School in Bakersfield, Northern California. Mears had a serious case of auto-immune disease alopecia early in life, causing him to shed nearly all of his body hair.

Mears has worked as both a stuntman and an actor. He appeared in minor roles in The Tick, ER, Alias, Nash Bridges, Men in Black II, The Shield, CSI: Miami, NY. Mr. & Mrs Smith, Mr. & Mrs Smith, CSI: My Name Is Earl, Mr. & Mrs Smith, Mr. & Mrs Smith, The Hills Have Eyes 2. His stunt appearances include the films Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Blades of Glory, as well as TV series Angel and Bones.

Mears had his breakthrough role in the 2009 film Friday the 13th. Make-up and special effects guru Scott Stoddard, who created the new look for Mears' character, Jason Voorhees, recommended him to the developers, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form of Platinum Dunes. He is one of the tallest actors to have played Jason, alongside Ken Kirzinger, who stands at a similar height to Mears. He was nominated for an MTV Movie Award for his role in Voorhees, but Heath Ledger was voted Joker in The Dark Knight, but he was disqualified as the Joker.

Mears did a lot of study on child development in order to flesh out the role of Camp Crystal Lake's legendary resident serial killer: Byron.

He is set to return for either another Friday the 13th sequel or another Platinum Dunes film. If Mears reprises his role as Jason, he will be the second person to play the role more than once, next to Kane Hodder. In the 2010 science fiction horror film sequel Predators, he played a Predator.

On the Superego show, Mears appeared in Ultraforce 2. In the episode "Romantic Expressionism," he appeared in the American sitcom Community. In Pirates of the Caribbean: In Stranger Tides, he appeared as a zombie and credited as "Master-at-Arms."

In Compound Fracture, Mears appeared alongside fellow horror actor Tyler Mane of Rob Zombie's Halloween.

Warner Bros. renounced their film rights to the 13th series to Paramount on Friday, according to a deal that permitted Warner Bros. to co-produce Interstellar. Mears revealed that Paraphrasedoutput was working with Platinum Dunes to produce a new installment "as fast as possible" one week later.

Mears portrayed the character RoboCop in a series of advertisements for the insurance company Direct Line in 2021.
