MMA career

Brunson made his professional MMA debut against John Bryant in May 2010, where he defeated him by a rear-naked choke in less than a minute. He then won his next five fights, but none of them made it past 2:30 in the first round.

Brunson made his Strikeforce Challengers debut against Jeremy Hamilton on June 24, 2011. He was able to win by a unanimous vote.

Brunson fought his second fight for Strikeforce just over a month after his debut. On July 30, 2011, he met Lumumba Sayers on the undercard of Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson. In the first round, he received the fight by submission.

Brunson's next fight was on November 18, 2011 at Strikeforce Challengers: Britt vs. Sayers versus Nate James. He was the winner of the fight by unanimous vote.

Tate vs. Rousey was supposed to meet Ronaldo Souza on March 3, 2012 at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey. However, the Ohio State Athletic Commission refused his combat license based on an eye exam he had completed. Brunson fought wearing contacts in all of his matches, but Ohio has ruled against this. He started a Lasik surgery right away and skipped about six weeks. Rousey vs. Kaufman was defeated by KO in the 1st round of the 1st round on August 18, 2012, when he met Souza at Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman.

Brunson was allowed to participate in The Ultimate Fighter 17, but he was barred from the sport for the first day due to Showtime's inability to release him from his service.

On December 29, 2012, Brunson made his UFC debut against Chris Leben against an injured Karlos Vemola. Brunson fought his way into life despite being a late replacement and heavy underdog.

On June 8, 2013, he was supposed to face Ronny Markes at UFC on Fuel TV 10. However, the contest was called off on the day of the weigh in due to Markes' involvement in a traffic collision. Although Markes was not hurt, the injury did not prevent him from competing.

Brunson had planned to face Yoel Romero on August 31, 2013, but she was forced to cancel due to an injury.

On November 6, 2013, he was scheduled to face Antonio Braga Neto at UFC Fight Night 31. Neto was forced to leave the fight due to an injury, and Brian Houston was brought to the rescue. Brunson won the fight in a dramatic fashion early, coming up with a head kick on Houston and then securing a back-naked choke submission.

At UFC Fight Night 35, the match with Romero was postponed until January 15, 2014. Brunson was kicked by a left hook in the first two rounds and lost the match via TKO due to elbows on the ground in the third round. Both fighters received a $50,000 Fight of the Night bonus.

Brunson had signed a four-fight deal with UFC on February 15, 2014.

Brunson was supposed to face Lorenz Larkin at UFC 176 on August 2, 2014. Larkin/Brunson was rescheduled and eventually took place at UFC 177 on August 30, 2014. Brunson was victorious by a unanimous decision.

Brunson was supposed to face Ed Herman at UFC on Fox 13. However, Brunson was disqualified just hours before the match, but it was ended just hours before the show, as Brunson was stricken with a stomach ulcer. The fight with Herman was postponed and took place on January 31, 2015 at UFC 183. In the first round, Brunson defeated the opponent by TKO.

On June 20, 2015, Brunson was supposed to face Krzysztof Jotko at UFC Fight Night 69. Brunson remained out of the match on June 9 due to a rib injury and being briefly replaced by Uriah Hall. Hall was refused after three days of booking due to a suspected visa issue. In turn, Jotko was stripped entirely from the card.

On August 8, 2015, Brunson met Sam Alvey at UFC Fight Night 73. In the first round, he secured the fight by TKO.

Brunson was last seen on February 21, 2016, at UFC Fight Night 83, against Roan Carneiro. He won the battle via TKO for his third straight TKO stoppage in the first round.

On July 9, 2016, he was due to meet Gegard Mousasi at UFC 200. Nevertheless, he was later forced to pull out of the match and be compelled to leave.

Brunson performed Uriah Hall at UFC Fight Night 94 on September 17, 2016. Brunson won the first round by TKO after losing Hall with a left hook and finishing him with a flurry of ground and pound.

Brunson defeated Robert Whittaker at UFC Fight Night 102 on November 27, 2016. He lost in the first round of TKO. Both participants were given a Fight of the Night bonus.

On February 11, 2017, Brunson met Anderson Silva at UFC 208. He was disqualified by a unanimous decision.

On June 11, 2017, Brunson defeated Dan Kelly at UFC Fight Night 110. After beating Kelly with a straight left and finishing him off with a barrage of ground and pound, he was defeated by a knockout in the first round.

On October 28, 2017, Brunson defeated Lyoto Machida at UFC Fight Night 119. In the first round, he won the fight by knockout. Since winning, he was also awarded a Performance of the Night bonus.

In the main event at UFC on Fox 27, there was a match between Ronaldo Souza and him on January 27, 2018. In the first round, Brunson lost via TKO.

On August 4, 2018, UFC 227, he was supposed to face Antônio Jnior. Brunson, on the other hand, ruled out of the fight in early July due to an eye injury.

On November 3, 2018, Brunson defeated Israel Adesanya at UFC 230. In round one, he lost the fight due to a mechanical knockout.

On May 4, 2019, Brunson took on Elias Theodorou at UFC Fight Night 151. He received the fight by a unanimous vote.

On August 17, 2019, UFC 241's Ian Heinisch met him. He was voted unanimously into the fight.

Brunson revealed on his social media that he had signed a new, six-fight deal with the UFC in December.

Brunson was set to meet Edmen Shahbazyan at UFC 248 on March 7, 2020. However, the bout had been postponed and will be held on April 11, 2020 at UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Harris, which was announced on February 20. The performance was eventually postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Brunson will face Shahbazyan in a fight on August 1, 2020 at UFC Fight Night. In round three, he was defeated by a technical knockout.

On ESPN, Brunson met Kevin Holland on March 20, 2021. He was able to win the contest by a unanimous decision.

Brunson vs. Till on September 4, 2021, at UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs. Till. In round three, he dominated the contest with a back-naked choke submission.

Brunson had planned to face Jared Cannonier at UFC 270 on January 22, 2022. The match was halted in 2022 due to undisclosed reasons. In round two, he was disqualified by a knockout. Brunson said that his next fight in mixed martial arts would be his last fight.

Brunson is scheduled to face Jack Hermansson at UFC on ESPN 42 on December 3, 2022.
