Derek Anthony Barnett (born June 25, 1996) is an American football defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL).

He played college football at the University of Tennessee, and was drafted by the Eagles with the 14th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Early years

Barnett attended Brentwood Academy in Brentwood, Tennessee. As a senior, he had 60 tackles (18 for loss) and 5.5 sacks. He was rated by the Rivals.com recruiting network as a four-star recruit. In 2013, he committed to the University of Tennessee to play college football under head coach Butch Jones.

College career

Barnett became Tennessee's first true freshman defensive lineman to start the season opener. Barnett had three total tackles in the home win over Utah State in the season opener. In the home win over Arkansas State, he was fired for his first collegiate sack in his first week. In Barnett's first game against a conference foe, he finished with eight tackles against Georgia in a loss at Sanford Stadium in the annual rivalry game. In the home win over Chattanooga Mocs, he had his first collegiate triumph in his career as a wrestler. With 2.0 in the road loss at Vaught–Hemingway Stadium, he played his first multi-sack game of his collegiate career. In addition, he had ten total tackles. Barnett had a season-high three sacks against South Carolina on November 1, along with five total tackles in the overtime victory at Williams-Brice Stadium. Barnett will play a key role in the Volunteers' bowl game for the first time since the 2010 season. Barnett had three total tackles in the 45-28 victory at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Florida, against Iowa in the 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl.

Barnett started his junior season with a seven-tackle win over Appalachian State in overtime. He had one tackle against Virginia Tech at Bristol Motor Speedway in the highly awaited neutral site match. Barnett had five tackles and two sacks in the Volunteers' first victory over the Gators since 2004 in a year-long rivalry match against SEC East rival Florida at Neyland Stadium. Barnett had five total tackles and two sacks for the second straight game, as well as a critical forced fumble by teammate Corey Vereen for a defensive touchdown. Barnett had six total tackles and a sack in the Volunteers' first loss of the season against Texas A&M at Kyle Field. Professional career

Barnett was selected in the first round (14th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, who used the pick obtained by trading Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings. He was the third defensive end to be selected, behind Myles Garrett (1st overall, Browns) and Solomon Thomas (3rd overall, 49ers). Barnett was the first of six Tennessee Volunteers to be selected in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed him to a fully guaranteed four-year, $12.85 million deal with a signing bonus of $7.48 million.

Throughout training camp for a startling defensive position, he competed with Brandon Graham, Chris Long, Vinny Curry, and Steven Means. Doug Pederson, the head coach, named him the backup right defensive end behind veteran Vinny Curry to start the regular season.

In a 30-17 victory, he made his professional debut during the Eagles' season-opener again, while the Washington Redskins' two solo tackles were also recorded. With a 13–3 record, clinching home field advantage, and a first-round bye, the Philadelphia Eagles remained atop the NFC East. Barnett appeared in his first playoff game and helped the Eagles beat the Atlanta Falcons 15–10 in the NFC Divisional Round on January 13, 2018. During a 38–7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, Barnett had two solo tackles and a strip sack on quarterback Case Keenum. In the Eagles' 41–33 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII, he recovered a fumble caused by Brandon Graham after Graham had a strip/sack on Tom Brady. This was the Eagles' first Super Bowl victory in franchise history.

Barnett played seven games before being placed on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery. On the year, he had 17 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Barnett played in 14 games and earned 6.5 sacks, 30 tackles-for-loss, 17 quarterback hits, 22 quarterback hits, and two forced fumbles in the 2019 season.

The Eagles tried Barnett's five-year deal on April 28, 2020.
