Derartu Tulu Career

Life and career

In the village of Bekoji in Arsi Province, the same village as Kenenisa Bekele, Derartu Tulu grew up tending cattle. She is Ejegayehu Dibaba, Tirunesh Dibaba, and Genzebe Dibaba's cousin.

Derartu is the first Ethiopian woman and the first African woman to win an Olympic gold medal, which she won in the 10,000 m event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Since lap time was ahead of the rest of the field, she and Elana Meyer (South Africa) ran for lap. She sat out 1993 and 1994 with a knee injury and returned to action in the 1995 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, where she took gold, just an hour before the game began. She was held at Athens airport without food for 24 hours. She was disqualified from Fernanda Ribeiro in the same year and took home silver at the World Championships 10,000.

Her 1996 season was a trying one for her. Derartu lost her shoe in the competition and had to fight back to finish fourth place. She also placed fourth at the Olympic Games, where she was recovering from an injury. She won the world cross country championship for the second time in 1997, but did not participate in the 10,000 m World Championships. Tsion, a child born in 1998, was born in 1998, but she returned in 2000 in the best shape of her life. For the second time in the event's brief history, she captured 10,000 meters Olympic gold (the only woman to have done so). She also won the IAAF World Cross Country Championships for the third time. She won her first world 10,000 track title in Edmonton in 2001. This was her third time or Olympic gold medal. She has won five world and Olympic medals.

In 2001, she was rewarded with victories in the London and Tokyo marathons. She took fourth at the 2005 World Championships, logging a personal record of 2:23:30. In 2000 and 2003, she also won the Portugal Half Marathon and the Lisbon Half Marathon in 2003. She won the New York City Marathon in 2009, defeating Paula Radcliffe, Lyudmila Petrova, and Salina Kosgei.

Derartu skipped the New York Marathon in 2004, where she would have competed with marathon World Record holder Paula Radcliffe, who has had a long rivalry with over the years, and instead concentrated on the Olympic Games, where she won the bronze medal in the 10,000 meters behind Xing Huina and her cousin Ejegayehu Dibaba. (Radcliffe failed to finish)

In her late thirties, Derartu continued to run competitively, although most of her old rivals resigned. In Yokohama, she finished her last marathon in 2011.

She is best known for her speed and her 60.3 second-last lap at the Sydney Olympics, which was a sprint of note.

Since November 14, she has been the president of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF).
