Demetrius Andrade Career

Amateur career

Demetrius Andrade is one of the best known amateur boxing stars amongst all Rhode Island fighters in history. Andrade, a Providence immigrant of Cape Verdean descent, began boxing in 1994 at the age of 6. His nickname, "Boo Boo," became well-known among locals, and he later became a well-known name throughout the United States.

In 2005, Andrade won the United States Amateur Boxing Championship and repeated it in 2006, winning the National Golden Gloves. In 2007, he captured the National Golden Gloves again, but did not compete in the United States. Amateurs were unable to perform this year due to injuries.

Andrade's first attempts at international level, losing to Eastern Europe opponents at the World Cup in 2005 and 2006. Despite this, he earned the silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, losing by a slim 7-6 margin to Brazilian hometown favorite Pedro Lima.

In the semifinal round, he earned gold at the 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships, defeating Kakhaber Zhvania, Dmitrijs Sostaks, 2005 silver medalist Jack Culcay-Keth, and Adem Kâlççç. He defeated Non Boonjumnong of Thailand in the finals, a match in which Andrade inflicted a standing eight count on Boonjumnong but was leading by a score of 11-3 when Boonjumnong retired due to a right arm injury.

Andrade attempted one last amateur venture before deciding to go professional. He defeated hard-punching Keith Thurman 27:13, 2008 In 2008, Demetrius Andrade was honoured with the privilege of representing the United States in the Beijing Olympics, and he rose to the top of the Olympic favorites for a gold medal. He defeated Kakhaber Zhvania and the highly regarded Russian Andrey Balanov 14:3 to advance to the quarterfinals, but Kim Jung-Joo 9:11 shocked him in a turbulent loss. Despite being unable to win an Olympic Gold medal this year, Andrade decided to put an end to his stellar amateur career and become a specialist.

Professional career

In October 2008, Demetrius Andrade became a professional boxer and had his first pro bout.

In a second-round knockout, Patrick Cape was defeated by him at Northern Quest Casino, Airway Heights, Washington. After winning a TKO over Eric Marriott on Friday Night Fights for the first time on Friday Night Fights, he defeated Tom Joseph in a 1st-round TKO victory on March 6. In a second-round KO, Demetrius defeated Arnulfo Javier Romero just 2 weeks later. In the second round, he defeated Tony Hirsch in a unanimous decision over him and then went on to win with a KO over Chad Greenleaf.

Andrade went on to defeat John Williams by TKO in the 6th round of the 6th round, with Chris Chatman winning by unanimous vote. Andrade's record soared to an all-time high after losing to Andrade in a 1st-round KO, beating Italian boxer Bernardo Guereca. Demetrius defeated his next ten opponents, with five fights ending by KO and five others ending by unanimous decision.

In the Summer of 2013, an opportunity arose when the vacant WBO light middleweight title would be decided by one match between Andrade and Armenian contender Vanes Martirosyan (33-0-1, 21 KOs). On July 6, Andrade was supposed to meet titlist Zaurbek Baysangurov in Kyiv, Ukraine. After suffering a back injury and being hospitalized for a long time, Baysangurov was released. The brawl took place at the American Bank Center in Texas on November 9, 2013. The confrontation was originally scheduled to take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on September 7. Andrade won the vacant WBO title after a split decision of 114–113, 117–110, and 112–115. After dominating the entire round, Andrade was knocked down in the first round by a left hook by Martirosyan. Andrade dominated the bulk of the battle thanks to his jab and quickness.

Brian Rose, the British boxer and compulsory challenger, 25-1-1, 7 KO), would be the first defense of Andrade's world championship reign on March 20, 2014. The blitz will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on June 14th. Andrade defeated Rose, a British immigrant, in the 7th round of TKO. At the time of stoppage, Andrade was ahead on all scorecards (60-51 and 60-52 twice). In the first round, Rose was kicked in the left hand from Andrade. Andrade connected with a counter right hook, placing Rose on the canvas for the second time in round 3. Referee Michael Griffin stepped in to put an end to round 7's one-sided drawdown. Of the total punches that were recorded, Andrade produced 149 of 542 of 432 total punches (33%), while Rose connected on a minor 30 of 179 total punches (17%). With 14 knockouts, Andrade defeated Andrade to a landslide. Andrade put on a good showing to secure his position as a top champion in order to help with a future match with the division's best, including Canelo and Floyd Mayweather. Andrade made $200,000 in comparison to Rose, who earned $100,000. On HBO, the fight attracted 882,000 viewers.

On December 13, 2014, Andrade was scheduled to face Jermell Charlo (24-0, 11 KOs) at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, defending his WBO crown. Due to money issues, the transaction was postponed on November 16. Andrade was expected to $250,000, but later increased to what would be a career-high $300,000. Banner Promotions reported in January 2015 that the war was back on and that it was likely to take place in the Spring of 2015. Following a month, Star Boxing and Banner Promotions announced that a contract was being carried out, but that Andrade would eventually opt out. Andrade sued entertainment company Roc Nation in August 2015 after they allegedly persuaded him not to accept a $550K contract to fight Charlo as part of a three-fight contract with Showtime in exchange for a separate contract that did not materialize.

Andrade was stripped of the World Boxing Organization Committee after 13 months without title defenses or none scheduled. The WBO had accepted Andrade's promoter's request to allow him to compete for the vacant WBO middleweight championship against Matt Korobov on September 11, 2014. "I would like to thank the WBO for having faith in us and giving us the opportunity," Andrade's father and trainer, Paul Andrade said. However, it was revealed that Andrade had decided to withdraw from the fight and campaign in the junior middleweight division less than a month later.

Andrade would return to action against 28-year-old Argentine boxer Dario Fabian Pucheta (20-2, 11 KOs) for the vacant WBA International light middleweight championship at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, on September 16, 2015. Banner Promotions and Star Boxing announced that Andrade will return to the ring after 16 months of inactivity against 28-year-old Dario Fabian Pucheta (20-2, 11 KOs) on September 16, 2015. Andrade said in a tweet: "It's about time that I get back to the ring." "I am delighted to be fighting [near] home in front of my followers," said the author. Andrade debuted the card. Andrade defeated Pucheta in the second round to earn the vacant regional title. Pucheta was a strong loser in round one after a straight left. Pucheta was disqualified again in the first round after Andrade scored a right uppercut. Round 2 ended with another right hand.

Andrade will face Willie Nelson (25-2-1, 15 KOs), 28 years old vs. Jones) at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York, according to ESPN. Andrade won by a 12th round stoppage over Nelson. With the win, Andrade advanced to a WBC championship shot against then-crowned champion Jermell Charlo. During the war, Andrade knocked Nelson down four times before it came to an end. Following a right hand, the final knockdown was recorded in round 12. Referee Dick Pakozdi called the match off at 1:38 of the round. Before the final knockdown, the other knockdowns were present in round 1, 11, 11, 11, and 12. Andrade was able to move around and continiusly land at will as Nelson was hesitant to punch punches. "I'm going to get the belts," Andrade said after the war. People can't run no more. The best will fight the best in the world. I'm coming for them. I'm back, and I'm better. Me and my staff were incredibly hard. We've figured out what we're going to do to bring it to the next level. I'm excited for the Charlo brothers. "I like them."

Andrade, although he was required for Jermell Charlo's WBC title, made it clear that he was also aiming for a match against former WBA'super' champion Erislany Lara (23-2-2, 13 KOs), who was also ranked one of the top 154 pounds at 154 pounds. "I'm going to ask Stephen (Espinoza) if he's interested in fighting Demetrius and Lara," Andrade's promoter Artie Pellulo told ESPN, "I'm going to ask Stephen (Espinoza) if he's interested in fighting between Demetrius and Lara." However, Andrade later said he'd only face Lara as a "last resort," aiming for a less coveted title with the intention of securing a match with Jermell Charlo; "He [Lara] will not participate or try and make the fight exciting, especially if it's coming into my favor." "He's just going to live, try to run, and do the little pitty-pat counter punches."

At the MBS Arena in Potsdam, Brandenburg, Andrade agreed to defeat Jack Culcay (22-1, 11 KOs) for the WBA 'Regular' light middleweight title. The Sauerland Event took the purse for the fight, which will go to Andrade in 25 percent. Despite being keen on Andrade's return to action with Manny Pacquiao, Showtime has confirmed that they would not be broadcasting the fight. On the way to win gold at the 2007 World Championships, Andrade defeated Culcay in the amateurs. After Andrade's camp had failed to meet several deadlines that the WBA had arranged for the official contracts to be signed, the contest was called off. The contract was eventually signed, but because they had failed to comply with the WBA and Team Sauerland's deadlines, the battle was called off.

According to reports, Andrade and Culcay had agreed to fight for the WBA 'Regular' title on March 11, 2017. The fight was confirmed by the Freidrich-Ebert-Halle in Ludwigshafen, Germany, just weeks later. Andrade was a two-time world champion after winning the WBA 'Regular' title by a split decision. Andrade's 116-112 verdict was praised by two judges, but Culcay's 115–114 were 115–114. The contest was deemed close, with up to five rounds being thrown between the two teams. Andrade came out a clear winner as he outworked Culcay, according to Sky Sports analysts. Andrade praised his results in the post-fight interview, saying, "I thought I did everything that I needed to do." I went to Germany and took the award. Culcay came as a champion, but I was the better man. "I outlanded him and I came out with the win." He also stated that he was eager to be back in the world championship mix and defend against the best 154 pound fighters in the world championship tournament.

Andrade will appear on a HBO card on October 21, 2017 as part of his latest multi-fight contract with Jezéel Corrales vs. Alberto Machado at the Turning Stone in Verona, New York, on September 14, 2017. Alantez Fox (23-0-1, 11 KOs), his foe, was revealed to be a major step up in action. It was also announced that the fight would be a non-title match at middleweight. Since 2012, Fox, a natural middleweight, has been fighting at the weight. Andrade put on a good showing on fight night, winning the title after 12 rounds by unanimous decision. The three judges' verdicts were 118–109, 119–109, and 116–111 in his favor. Andrade in the first round stung Fox and seemed as though he'd be able to finish the match inside the distance. Rather, Fox went back to defense mode and made Andrade do the deposition. Andrade faltered during a round 7 exchange with Fox. When Andrade recovered to his feet, he was shocked to see the referee counting, who declared the dismissal as a government joke. Fox did not land a punch in the exchange, according to replays. Andrade's jab and left hand were used to command the war. According to ComputBox results, Fox 52 of 301 punches fired (17%) during the 12 rounds. Andrade, the definite champion after 12 rounds, was ranked 158 of his 572 (16%), with 49 percent of his power punches landing.

Andrade thought he did well on his first appearance at middleweight and that there was always room for improvement. "I did everything I needed to do," he said. It was a blast to shoot 12 rounds at this weight. Fox is a tough kid, and he recovered well after being injured early in the first round. He wasn't sloppy and knew how to survive, so I did not finish him." Andrade vacated his WBA 'Regular' light middleweight title before the fight to get to middleweight, which would eventually guarantee him a championship spot. On HBO, the show attracted an average of 63,000 viewers and a maximum of 685,000 viewers.

ESPN's Dan Rafael announced that HBO would air Andrade against 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Yamaguchi (15-0, 7 KOs) undercard of Jaime Munc's WBO light middleweight title defense against Liam Smith on July 21 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on June 20, 2018. The fight was announced on June 26, but Andrade revealed that he had left Star Boxing & Banner Promotions, which had both co-promoted Andrade for ten years. Both sides made the call, which was a joint decision. "It's been a long journey," Andrade said. I've learned a lot, and I'm grateful for all that Artie (Pelullo of Banner Promotions) and Joe (DeGuardia of Star Boxing) did for me and my career. We sometimes seemed as though it was us against the entire world in an attempt to bring the top fighters into the ring with me, but at the end of the day, Artie and Joe led me to two World Championships, and I really want to thank them for their efforts! I'm hoping to be back in the ring soon and have the opportunity to tell the world that I'm going to be a World Champion once more!" Andrade also established himself as a career free agent. Andrade bought out the remainder of his deal, according to The Ring. Falcao's match was called off.

Billy Joe Saunders (26-0, 12 KOs) was ordered to make a mandatory defense against Andrade on July 12, with both sides having ten days to reach a compromise. Andrade will be crowned as one of Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing USA's new players on July 13, a move that would see him competing on DAZN. Andrade was unveiled as one of Matchroom Boxing USA's signings on July 17, the official launch. At this time, it was likely that Andrade would make his ring return in October 2018, but there was no confirmation that Heard would be participating in the purse auction for Saunders vs. Andrade. The purse bid, which had been planned for the evening, was postponed after it was announced that Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren had signed a deal for the fight in the United States under the banner of Matchroom USA on DAZN. According to reports, Top Rank representatives were due to be present at the purse in an attempt to win the fight for ESPN+. Warren said the fight will be broadcast on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom, not BT Sport, with Matchroom USA having promotional rights on the event. According to Hearn, the contest will be held at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 20th.

Saunders had tested positive for banned drug oxilofrine, which is known as a stimulant, according to ESPN's Dan Rafael on September 27th. The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) carried out the experiment on August 30. Hearn said he would wait to see if the Massachusetts commission will allow Saunders to fight, but Andrade will still attend the main event, whether it be a vacant world championship or a non-title match. The positive result was due to a nasal spray, according to promoter Warren, and the UKAD approved it. Saunders was not in breach of their laws, according to the BBBofC. The MSAC denied Saunders a licence at a hearing, implying that he could not defend his position against Andrade. According to various sources, the Saunders team would have lost more than $2.3 million. Paco Valcarcel, the WBO's president, told ESPN that Saunders would not be discharged right away, and Andrade's fight against Namibian boxer Walter Kautondokwa (17-0, 16 KOs), who at the time was ranked second in the WBO, will be for the vacant WBO intertimo title. Saunders voluntarily vacated the title on October 11, ensuring the match would be for the full WBO championship. Andrade was still set to receive his $800,000 reward for the war, according to reports.

Andrade became a two-weight world champion in front of 6,874 supporters, capturing the vacant WBO title after dropping Kautondokwa four times in the fight en route to winning by unanimous decision. In Andrade's favour, the scorecards read 120–104, 120–104, and 119–105. At least two of the knockdowns were due to balance problems. Andrade defeated Kautondokwa with a left to the head in the first round. Though Kautondokwa was on the front page, Andrade struck him again with a shot to the head that badly injured him. Referee Steve Willis did not report the foul. Andrade landed left hand to the jaw that fell Kautondokwa for the second time. Andrade landed overhand left in round 4, bringing Kautondokwa to the canvas for the third time in the game. At the same time, Kautondokwa obtained a left hand that brought Andrade's glove to the canvas, but referee Willis did not honor Kautondokwa's demise. Kautondokwa stood up, but he was immediately struck with a straight left, knocking him down again. Andrade had a large lead on the scorecards at the midway point of the contest. He then stayed away from Kautondokwa's strong right hand by circling the arena in the last half of the competition. Andrade was occasionally struck by Kautondokwa, but his strength was sufficient to sustain him. Andrade said, "I am] the world's best middleweight champion, with my second bout at 160." I'm feeling well. I'm positive I handled my power well, and I'm sure the 160-pound division will keep on increasing and expanding, and I want to challenge the best out there." Kautondokwa was also praised for his toughness. According to CompuBox, Andrade landed 152 of 501 punches (30%), and Kautondokwa landed 45 of his 325 thrown (14%). In a single round, Kautondokwa did not land more than 8 punches.

Andrade made his first WBO belt defense against Artur Akavov, who was ranked #8 in the WBO at middleweight, on January 18, 2019. Andrade dominated the majority of the fight, defeating Akavov in the final round with 2:36 seconds remaining.

Maciej Sulecki, the WBO's second middleweight champion, took the WBO middleweight title defense against him. Andrade had to abandon his challenger midway through the first round to win by a narrow unanimous vote.

Andrade defeated Luke Keeler, who was ranked #3 by the WBO and #10 by the IBF at middleweight on January 30, 2020. Andrade was able to get two knockdowns early in the game. Andrade went on the offensive in the ninth and threatened to bring down the match by unleashing a rash of punches on Keeler, causing the referee to call off the match and award Andrade the TKO victory.

Andrade's next fight will be against Dusty Hernández-Harrison, who has defeated in a non-title match against the super middleweight maximum of 168 pounds. On November 27, the ten-round match at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, will be held on November 27. The match will be broadcast live on DAZN and promoted by Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing. However, Hernández-Harrison tested positive for COVID-19 and had to pull out of the fight. The match was called off, but Demetrius Andrade, a new one, was on the lookout.

Demetrius Andrade was ordered by the WBO to defend his position against mandatory challenger Liam Williams. In Hollywood, Florida, a fight was called for on April 17 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Andrade defeated Williams, who was ranked third in the WBO, receiving a knockdown in round two. The contest went the distance, with all judges scoring the match in favour of Andrade.

He defeated Jason Quigley by TKO in the second round on November 19, 2021.

Following his victory over Quigley, the WBO ordered Andrade to weigh in on a mandatory championship defense against Janibek Alimkhanuly after several postponements, but allowing him to keep the middleweight title as well. Andrade pulled out of the contest with Parker later that day, citing a strain suffered during preparation camp.

The WBO ordered Andrade to defend his name against Alimkhanuly on July 2022, granting the pair 30 days to come to terms. Andrade would abandon his middleweight title to reopen talks with Parker He officially vacated the middleweight title later this month.

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 26, 2023
On Saturday night, David Benavidez wiped out Demetrius Andrade in a chilling fashion before handing over the gauntlet to Canelo Alvarez. Benavidez, the former middleweight and light-middleweight world champion who was fighting his way to a six-round victory against Andrade, the former middleweight and light-middleweight world champion who was billed as one of his career to date, won a six-round statement contest against him on his second appearance at 168 pounds. It was the latter who got off to a good start in Las Vegas and arguably banked the first three rounds as he displayed precisely the kind of boxing prowess the sport's diehard followers know he has in the locker.

ISAAN KHAN - SPORTS JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR: A Sportsmail investigation reveals that boxers can now obtain performance-enhancing drugs before combats, which allows boxers to lawfully take performance-enhancing drugs before fights.
