Early years
Curry was born in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and played high school basketball at Fort Defiance, where he used his coach's barn to practice shooting every day. He was named as the all-time best scorer in school history, and he was named a McDonald's All-American in 1982. Curry also played baseball and won state championships in both sports; he was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 1982 Major League Baseball draft.
Personal life
Muggsy Bogues, a Cleveland teammate of Curry and Charlotte Hornets, appeared in a Minor League Baseball game for the Gastonia Rangers of the South Atlantic League on June 21, 1991. The publicity stunt was arranged by George Shinn, the team's owner. In a three-inning game, Curry allowed just one run and struck out four batters.
Dell and his partner, Sonya (née Adams), founded the Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman, a preschool in Huntersville, North Carolina, in 1995.
In 1998, Curry established the Dell Curry Foundation, a youth-focused service in Charlotte, North Carolina. The foundation runs five learning centers in Charlotte that offer educational assistance and drug abuse counseling.

College career
Curry, Perry Young, Al Young, and Keith Colbert were among the four-year starters at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, as well as contemporaries Bobby Beecher, Perry Young, Al Young, and Keith Colbert. In 1983 and 1984, the Hokies participated in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), finishing third in the former. Despite qualifying for at-large bids to the NCAA tournament in 1985 and 1986, the team failed in the first round on both occasions. Curry was dubbed the Metro Conference's Player of the Year in 1986 during his senior season. NCAA basketball did not have a three-point line prior to the 1986–87 season; Curry's accurate long-range shooting was not rewarded; it will be later in his NBA career. (The three-point line was introduced in several conferences at various distances in the early and mid 1980s, but it was not recognized by the NCAA.)
Curry has played baseball for Virginia Tech as well. He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 14th round of the 1985 MLB draft but he wanted to play basketball.
Curry had 2,389 points (second all-time) and 295 steals (all-time champion) in basketball, as well as a 6–1 record with a 3.81 ERA in baseball.
In 1996, he was inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame, his first year of eligibility.
NBA career
In the 1986 NBA draft, Curry was selected as the 15th overall pick by the Utah Jazz. He played one season in Utah before being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1987, where he spent the 1987–88 season. He was left unprotected by Cleveland for the 1988 NBA expansion draft and was the second player selected by the Charlotte Hornets, the first by the Charlotte Hornets. Curry played for ten seasons in Charlotte, mainly off the bench to provide instant offense with three-point shootings. He was a regular in the Sixth Man of the Year debates and received the award in 1993–94. He was once the franchise's all-time statistical leader in points, games played, three-point field goals, and a three-point field goal percentage. He was the team's last player to return from the team's inaugural season ten years ago when he left the team in 1998.
Curry spent one season with the Milwaukee Bucks before playing his last three seasons for the Toronto Raptors. He has career averages of 11.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists. Curry retired as the all-time leading scorer in Hornets history with 9,839 points.
Post-playing career
Curry was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
Curry was hired as an assistant coach of the Charlotte Bobcats on June 18, 2007, but he resigned before the season began in order to ensure he could attend his sons' basketball games.
Curry, along with longtime play-by-play announcer Steve Martin for the Charlotte Bobcats (now Charlotte Hornets), began serving as a commentator in 2009.
Curry was the recipient of the Bobby Jones Award at the Athletes in Action All Star Breakfast in 2016, which is held each year at the NBA All Star Weekend.
