Deen Castronovo Life

Deen J. Castronovo (born August 17, 1964) is an American drummer and singer best known for his participation in Journey and hard rock bands Bad English, Revolution Saints, and The Dead Daisies.

Steve Osbourne, Steve Valiant, Paul Rodgers, Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler's GZR, Hardline, and others have also worked as a tour and studio member.

Early life

Deen Castronovo was born in Westminster, California, and began drumming at the age of 6. He grew up in Keizer, Oregon, where he attended South Salem High School. Castronovo said that being in band at high school gave him identity and hope. Deen cites Steve Smith, Neil Peart, Terry Bozzio, Kiss, Rush, Rush, Van Halen, and AC/DC as examples of musical influences.

Personal life

After police say he physically injured a woman, Castronovo was arrested on June 14, 2015 and charged with fourth-degree assault and menacing. As a result, he was immediately banned from forthcoming Journey performances and later replaced by Omar Hakim on the band's 2015 tour. A Marion County grand jury charged Castronovo on felony charges of rape, sexual assault, unlawful use of a deadly weapon, and contempt of court on June 29, 2015 (violation of terms of bail following the June 14 arrest). Castronovo pleaded guilty to five domestic violence misdemeanor charges and was given a suspended term of four years of probation in a plea bargain.

The Wild Dogs, an America rock band formed in 1981 by Jeff Mark, Danny Kurth, Matt McCourt, and Pete Holmes. Pete Holmes, a drummer, was lured away by Black 'n Blue and was replaced by Jaime St. James. The band appeared on a compilation compilation compilation collection, but before a full album could be released with Shrapnel Records, St. James joined Black 'n Blue.' Deen was first discovered by McCourt, who recalled the locals, but it wasn't until Deen's 16-year-old drummer Castronovo that they joined the band that it became popular.

Castronovo appeared on self-titled debut album Wild Dogs (1983), the followup to Man's Best Friend (1984) and Reign Of Terror (1987). McCourt's props and Castronovo's showmanship were prominent among the band's live shows.

Castronovo met and began working with Tony MacAlpine, which resulted in the introduction of Neal Schon, the future long-time collaboration partner. Castronovo would be invited by Neal shortly after, as Bad English would be a new band starring Jonathan Cain, John Waite, and Ricky Phillips. Bad English disbanded 1991 after two albums, which included being nominated for Best New Group at the International Rock Awards in 1989. In 1995, a Greatest Hits was released.

Castronovo, who worked with Neal Schon, played drums and sang backing vocals on Hardline's debut album Double Eclipse. The album's first single "Takin' Me Down" debuted at No. 1 on the charts. Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart ranks 37 on Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The album's second single, a recreation of Danny Spanos' "Hot Cherie," debuted at No. 1 on the charts. On the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, 25 bands are ranked 25.

Castronovo appeared on Ozzmis, Ozzy Osbourne's seventh solo studio album. The album debuted on the UK Albums Chart and ranked number four on the US Billboard 200. Castronovo was also touring with Ozzy on a portion of the 1995 leg of the Retirement Sucks Tour.

Castronovo performed in a variety of bands alongside Schon, from Hardline to Paul Rodgers. He joined Journey, where he'll spend the next 18 years and 5 albums as the drummer, backing and occasional lead vocalist.

Castronovo, although not the original drummer for Journey, is the longest-serving drummer to date, having appeared on the albums Arrival (2001), Red 13 (2002), Eclipse (2011), and Freedom (2022).

"Still They Ride," "Mother, Father," and "Keep On Runnin'" were all performed in concert, with "Faithfully" and "Where Were You" in order to encourage the main lead vocalists to take a break. He appeared on "A Better Life" and "Never Too Late" on Generations, as well as "After Glow" on Freedom in the studio.

Following a domestic violence arrest in June 2015, Castronovo was fired by Journey in August 2015. On the band's 2015 tour, Omar Hakim was replaced by Omar Hakim, with longtime drummer Steve Smith rejoining the band later.

Schon and Narada Michael Walden announced Castronovo's return to Journey as a second drummer in July 2021. Following Walden's retirement from the company in 2022, he became the sole drummer once more, although they both appear on Freedom.

Neal Schon, who had not produced an album, was determined to see the content he had written come to life. Schon met up with Jeff Scott Soto at the annual NAMM show in Los Angeles and tested the waters with a jam session. Schon was at a show in Los Angeles with Marco Mendoza. The invitation, which invited Soto, Mendoza, and Castronovo to join him, began rehearsing and eventually recorded 11 songs on Soul Sirk's debut album, World Play. Though all the album's foundation songs were written for Planet Us, only one complete song from the band was used for Soul Sirk's debut.

The band was set to tour in early 2005 with a complete album titled World Play (the "black sleeve" version), but Castronovo became sick from exhaustion. Castronovo bowed out of Soul SirkUS on his doctor's suggestion and was replaced by Australian drummer Virgil Donati soon after.

Ultimate was a three-generations version of the album. The original with Castronovo drumming was the Black Sleeve version, the Green Sleeve version of the remastered, and the Yellow Sleeve was available in two editions: a European version with a bonus DVD and a Japanese version of the remaster with a bonus track. Castronovo's only one with the Black Sleeve version is the Black Sleeve.

When still with Journey, Castronovo, Jack Blades (Night Ranger, Damn Yankees, and Shaw Blades), and Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio, The Dead Daisies) formed Revolution Saints. On February 24, 2015, the band, where Deen served as lead vocalist and played drumming duties, released its self-titled debut album. On October 13, 2017, Light in the Dark, a sequel, was released. The album was ranked #8 on Dr. Music's 2017 "Album of the Year" chart.

Johnny Gioeli and Castronovo were first on stage together on the first Hardline album, Double Eclipse, which was released in 1992. The two were reunited in Italy 25 years ago to begin work on the debut Gioeli-Castronovo album, Set The World On Fire, available July 13, 2018. Both men have been on their musical paths since being introduced to one another, with Gioeli continuing to lead Hardline, as well as being the lead singer of Crush 40 and Axel Rudi Pell's band, while Castronovo spent time with various bands.
