Career

Messing received acclaim for her role as Harper in Tony Kushner's play Angels in America: Perestroika, which was released in 1993. Subsequently, she appeared in numerous episodes of the television series NYPD Blue from 1994 to 1995.

Messing made her film debut in 1995, appearing in Alfonso Arau's A Walk in the Clouds as the unfaithful wife of main character Paul Sutton (Keanu Reeves). Following this exposure, Fox made her the co-star of the television sitcom Ned & Stacey. From 1995 to 1997, the series ran for two seasons. In two episodes of the series Seinfeld, "The Wait Out" in 1996 and "The Yada Yada" in 1997, Messing appeared as Jerry Seinfeld's romantic interest. Messing turned down a leading role in another television sitcom in Donald Margulies' two-character play Collected Stories, which opened at the off-Broadway Manhattan Theatre Club. In 1997, she co-starred in McHale's Navy, as well as Tom Arnold.

Messing appeared in 1998 as the bioanthropologist Sloan Parker on ABC's dramatic science-fiction television series Prey. During this period, her handler visited her with the pilot script for Will & Grace, which is also available on television. She appeared in John Patrick Shanley's play Outside Mullingar, alongside Tony Award winner Br. O'Byrne, which opened previews at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on January 3, 2014. Mullingar was nominated for Best Play in the 2014 (68th Annual) Tony Awards.

Messing appeared in The Mysteries of Laura, a police procedural television program that premiered in September 2014. The series lasted for two seasons and ended in 2016.

In the television remake of the film Dirty Dancing (1987), Messing played Marjorie Houseman. In May 2017, it aired on ABC.
