Deborah Meaden Career

Career

Meaden studied business at Brighton Technical College, after which she spent time as a sales-room model in a fashion house. After graduation, she moved to Italy at 19 and established a glass and ceramics export company, which sold glass and ceramics to Harvey Nichols stores. After 18 months, the company failed.

Meaden and a partner purchased one of the first Stefanel textile franchises in the United Kingdom, and she and her partner were sold out two years later to her partner for £10,000. She had several profitable leisure and retail stores, including a stint at Butlins in Minehead where she operated a Prize Bingo.

Meaden began working with her family's company in 1988 to manage its amusement arcades, and in 1992, she joined Weststar Holidays, a family holiday park operator based in Exeter, Devon, with its main locations in South West England. She led a company buyout and bought the majority stake in 1999. Weststar was providing holidays to over 150,000 people each year by the time she sold the business six years ago, with an EBITDA in excess of £11 million. She made a partial departure in 2005 when Weststar was sold in a £33 million contract to Phoenix Equity Partners, and, when the company was sold to Alchemy Partners for £83 million, she valued her interest at around £19 million.

Meaden is best known for her appearances on the BBC Two series Dragons' Den, where she took over from Rachel Elnaugh in the third series in August 2006. Meaden was the only female investor, like Elnaugh, but the transition of Hilary Devey to replace James Caan changed in subsequent seasons. She has estimated that as of 2021, she has committed over £3.3 million to 63 companies.

Meaden performed in the eleventh series of the BBC One dance show Strictly Come Dancing, which began on September 7, 2013 and was partnered with professional dancer Robin Windsor. On October 26, she was ruled out of the show.
