Deborah Sonia Meaden (born 1959) is an English businesswoman who operated a multimillion-pound family holiday business prior to completing a management buyout, but she is best known for her appearances on BBC Two business show Dragons' Den.
Early life
Meaden was born in Taunton, Somerset. Deborah and her older sister Gail are both from Brightlingsea, Essex, after she was divorced when she was young, and her mother moved Deborah and her older sister Gail to Brightlingsea. Meaden attended Godolphin School in Salisbury for a brief period and then moved to Trowbridge High School for Girls (now The John of Gaunt School), which she left at the age of 16.
Personal life
Meaden met her husband in 1985 while working at Weststar during his college break. They divorced in 1993 after she went to Venezuela, but she and her husband married in 1993. The couple have no children and live in a period house near Langport, Somerset, with many animals. Meaden bought the house in 2006 after auctioning her Weststar Holidays company for £33 million. Since then, the house has undergone extensive renovations using period correct materials.

Career
Meaden studied business at Brighton Technical College, after which she spent time as a sales-room model in a fashion house. After graduation, she moved to Italy at 19 and established a glass and ceramics export company, which sold glass and ceramics to Harvey Nichols stores. After 18 months, the company failed.
Meaden and a partner purchased one of the first Stefanel textile franchises in the United Kingdom, and she and her partner were sold out two years later to her partner for £10,000. She had several profitable leisure and retail stores, including a stint at Butlins in Minehead where she operated a Prize Bingo.
Meaden began working with her family's company in 1988 to manage its amusement arcades, and in 1992, she joined Weststar Holidays, a family holiday park operator based in Exeter, Devon, with its main locations in South West England. She led a company buyout and bought the majority stake in 1999. Weststar was providing holidays to over 150,000 people each year by the time she sold the business six years ago, with an EBITDA in excess of £11 million. She made a partial departure in 2005 when Weststar was sold in a £33 million contract to Phoenix Equity Partners, and, when the company was sold to Alchemy Partners for £83 million, she valued her interest at around £19 million.
