Davis Webb Career

High school career

Webb attended Keller High School before moving to Prosper High School in Prosper, Texas, under coach Kent Scott. Webb coached the team to a district championship and a trip to the Texas 4A regional semifinals while attending Prosper High School.

Webb has received several accolades, including first-team All-District as a junior and Honorable mention All-State. Webb left Prosper after passing for 2,658 yards, 589 yards passing, and 36 touchdowns.

College career

By ESPN, Webb was ranked as a 4-star prospect coming out of high school and signed with the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Webb alternated as a backup quarterback behind fellow freshman Baker Mayfield and as a starter in 2013, becoming the second true freshman at the school to ever play for the university. An undetermined illness had affected Webb.

Webb's first game appearance in the game against TCU was against wide receiver Bradley Marquez, who threw the game-winning touchdown. Webb made his first appearance against Iowa State, where he passed for 415 yards and three touchdowns after an injury to Mayfield. For the first time in school history, his success was his fourth most yards passing.

He will put up his Iowa State record against West Virginia in a record-breaking performance. Webb went for 462 yards, 36–50 attempts, and two touchdowns, making Webb the first quarterback in school history to pass for over 400 yards twice in his freshman season. In addition, Billy Joe Tolliver's yardage set a new school freshman passing record. The passing yardage set a new Big 12 Conference freshman record, beating Baylor's Nick Florence's record of 2009.

On 71 attempts for 425 yards, Webb had completed 45 passes against Oklahoma State. Overall, the number of completions and attempts ranked fourth overall, and second overall, behind Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell.

Webb suffered in an outing against Kansas State, and the second half did not participate in the second half. However, his 78 yards thrown put him over the previous record for the school single-season freshman passing yards, which was previously held by Zebbie Lethridge in 1994. Baker Mayfield will return to the starting lineup for the next two games against Baylor and Texas following Webb's poor results against Kansas State.

Following a'miscommunication' and the open competition for the starting position, Baker Mayfield, a fellow quarterback, and the 2013 Holiday Bowl, it was announced that Baker Mayfield would leave the school following a'miscommunication' and the open competition for the starting position. Michael Brewer would be the only one competing in the Holiday Bowl after Mayfield's departure.

Webb was voted the starter for the Holiday Bowl against a top-five Arizona State team after a month of bowling. Webb's most impressive results of the 2013–14 NCAA football bowl season will be a highlight. In the 37–23 upset, he finished the game with 403 yards, 28–41 passing, and four touchdowns, tying a Holiday Bowl touchdown record and winning MVP awards.

Webb will finish his freshman season with multiple Big 12 Conference freshman records: single game total offense, single game offensive plays, most 400 yard passing attempts, and passing yards in a single game. Passes completed in a single game His success also set school freshman records for completions, attempts, touchdowns, passing yards, and 400 yard games. Webb will be named honorable mention Freshman All-American by College Football News, Big 12 Broadcasters Conference Freshman of the Year, as well as several weekly awards.

Following Michael Brewer's transfer to Virginia Tech, Webb was named as the starting quarterback heading into the 2014 season. Both Webb and the team as a whole were chosen as dark horse candidates for the Heisman Trophy and the national championship respectively by ESPN. Webb was also selected to the Maxwell Award and Manning Award watchlists for the best quarterback in college football. In a game against TCU on October 25, 2014, Webb started the season-opening ankle injury before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. Patrick Mahomes, a true freshman, had him replaced. Later it was announced that Webb would have surgery on his shoulder, which he sustained in a game against Oklahoma State on September 25.

Webb, Patrick Mahomes' backup quarterback, remained in possession of the starting quarterback position in 2015, when he took over Patrick Mahomes'. Webb declared his intention to transfer from Texas Tech on December 30, 2015.

Webb announced his intention to transfer to the University of Colorado Boulder on January 27, 2016. Webb was still enrolled at Texas Tech and nine credit hours shy of completing his degree requirements at the time of the announcement. Webb planned to be in Colorado for the first summer session after finishing his degree requirements and graduating from Texas Tech. In late May, Webb revealed that he would be heading to Berkeley, rather than Colorado. Sonny Dykes, the California Golden Bears' head coach, announced on May 25, 2016 that Webb had signed a financial aid contract and was officially accepted. He was eligible to play straight as a graduate transfer.

Webb passed for 482 of 620 passes (62%) for 4295 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in his first season in California, earning a 132 QBR of 385.63. While tying three other school records for passing attempts, completions, and total plays, as well as 30-yard passing games (10), he set school single-season records for passing attempts, completions, and total plays. He was named as the Golden Bear's Season MVP and received the Reese's Senior Bowl MVP award in 2016. Webb was also selected to the College Football All-America Team, and he was a semi-finalist for both the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award and the Earl Campbell Rose Award, as well as a First Mention of the Year by the Pac-12. Webb was also in the final 15 for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
