Davie Selke Career

Club career

Selke bought Werder Bremen in 2013 for €50,000, having spent the majority of his youth at Hoffenheim. He made his first-team debut for the club in the fourth-tier Regionalliga Nord on November 3, 2013, defeating Hannover 96 in a 3–2 Bundesliga victory over Hannover 96. He spent the majority of the 2013–2014 season in the reserves. During a training session, Selke exchanged blows with Fritz, the pair had to be separated by teammates. In three first-team appearances for Die Grün-Weißen, he scored 9 goals in 26 appearances for the reserves and remaining goalless in three goalless appearances.

Selke tying him to the club until 2018 at the start of the 2014-15 season. In a 4–2 Bundesliga loss against FC Augsburg on September 20, he scored his first goal, netting. A late flurry of four goals and four assists in nine games from Selke helped Bremen to a tenth-place finish in the league, securing their place in the Bundesliga for the second season. In 33 appearances in all competitions, he scored 10 goals in 33 goals.

Despite having signed a contract extension with Bremen a few months before, Selke announced on April 1 that he would join then 2. RB Leipzig is currently in last season's Bundesliga season. Selke's €8 million fee made him the most expensive 2 in the region. The best Bundesliga signing in the sport's history. With Selke being sued by a number of European clubs, including Real Madrid, his decision to drop down a division was seen as being financially motivated. Given Leipzig's long-term collaboration with energy drink manufacturer Red Bull, it was particularly relevant. Selke was affected by elements of the Werder Bremen fan base in the remaining games of the season after the announcement of his departure. In 36 appearances for the club, he scored ten goals in 36 appearances.

Selke made his RB Leipzig debut against FSV Frankfurt on July 25th, scoring his first goal for the club the following week, scoring in a 2–2 draw with Greuther Fürth. Selke scored the only goal in a 1–0 win over Arminia Bielefeld on November 21, which saw Leipzig lift to the summit of 2.Liga. After beating Karlsruher SC 2–0 on May 8, Die roten Bullen won promotion with a game to spare. It was the first time in the club's short history that they had been promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's short history. Ralf Rangnick, the Leipzig manager, pulled his hamstring after being chased by Selke with a glass of beer during the match festivities. With 10 goals in 32 appearances, he ended the 2015–16 season.

Selke scored one goal and assisted another in a 3–1 victory over Hamburg on matchday three, his first goal for the 2016–17 Bundesliga season. He netted a brace in a 4–1 victory over Hertha BSC, which saw the Leipzig side qualify for the Champions League for the first time in the club's history. He struggled for first-team football this season, but he started in just four out of 20 appearances for the season, scoring four goals.

Hertha BSC reported the signing of Selke on a long-term contract for a reported club record fee of €8.5 million on June 1st. Selke sustained a metatarsal injury in preparation that was later revealed to be a bone-marrow edema, and was barred from attending a number of weeks. He made his first league appearance for Hertha on matchday eight, going off the bench in a 2–0 loss to Schalke 04. In a 2–1 Europa League loss to Zorya, he scored his first goal for the club four days later, netting. In a 3–3 draw with Wolfsburg on Friday, he scored his first league goal, netting.

Selke played against RB Leipzig for the first time since joining Hertha BSC, and prior to the match, he promised to celebrate if he scored against his former club. Despite his team being down to ten men after Jordan Torunarigha was sent off in the eighth minute, he continued to score twice to lead Hertha to a 3–2 win. Selke scored another brace in a 2–1 victory over Köln on March 14, 2018, the second of which was the 1000th home goal scored in the Bundesliga by Hertha. Selke's return to goal scoring form continued in four games over the final stages of the season, resulting in a total of 10 goals in 27 appearances.

Selke suffered a collapsed lung in July 2018, effectively ending his participation in the 2018-2019 season. Following a fruitful recovery, he played regularly under new manager Pal Dardai and had eight assists in the league by February 2019, more than in any of his previous campaigns combined. During a 3–2 loss to Borussia Dortmund earlier this month, he made his 50th league appearance for the club.

Selke re-joined Werder Bremen on a loan agreement that will run into the summer of 2021 on January 31, 2020, the last day of the 2019-20 winter transfer period. Werder Bremen is reportedly bound to a transfer fee of between €10 and $15 million, which only takes place if the club remains in the Bundesliga. Werder Bremen's promotion to the 2nd class was largely due to Werder Bremen's demotion to the 2. Selke's contract was not long-term, according to the club's record.

Selke returned to Hertha BSC, where he competed under the guidance of coaches Pál Dárdai, Tayfun Korkut, and Felix Magath, ahead of the 2021-22 season. Selke played his 100th Bundesliga match for Hertha BSC on April 30, 2022, a 1–1 league draw against Arminia Bielefeld. He was in the starting eleven ten times and scored four goals in 25 league appearances this season.

International career

Selke, who was born in Schorndorf, Germany, is eligible to represent both Ethiopia, the birthplace of his father's father, and the Czech Republic, the birthplace of his mother's homeland. He and his fellow German youth international teammate Gedion Zelalem had been approached by the Ethiopian Football Association in the past to represent the African nation, but the African nation had to remain within the German camp.

He helped Germany win the European Under-19 Championship in 2014, a first for the German Under-19 Championship. Selke scored six goals in the tournament, earning him the Golden Boot award. Borko Veselinovi and lvaro Morata's combined total score tied for the tournament for the first time. Selke was also named as the tournament's Best Player.

Selke was selected in Horst Hrubesch's 18-man squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, on July 16th. In a 3–3 draw with South Korea, he scored his first goal at the tournament on August 7th, scoring Germany's second goal. Germany eventually won the Silver Medal, defeating Brazil in the final. He was selected in Germany's 23-man squad for the 2017 European Under-21 Championship in Poland, where the team advanced to the finals after defeating Spain 1–0.
