Personal life
Tom was born in Hinsdale, Illinois, to Charles and Marie Tom. Nicholle Tom, his twin sister, is also an actor. In an episode of Criminal Minds in 2008, he and Nicholle appeared together as siblings. Heather Tom, his older sister who is a regular on The Bold and The Beautiful, as well as Victoria Newman, appeared on The Young and the Restless. The two actors hardly merged together in a scene; after other actors assumed the roles their characters had been played for a brief period.
David Tom's musical experience includes stints as the lead singer of the indie rock band Eudora.
Career
In 1993, Tom was nominated for two Young Artist Awards for his appearances in Stepfather III and Stay Tuned. He had been nominated for "Outstanding Youth Ensemble in a Motion Picture" for Swing Kids in 1994, alongside co-stars Robert Sean Leonard, Christian Bale, and Frank Whaley.
Billy Abbott appeared on CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, from 1999 to 2002. In 2000 and 2001, Tom received two Daytime Emmy Awards for his "Outstanding Younger Actor" role, winning in the first year. In 2000, he received the Soap Opera Digest Award for "Outstanding Younger Lead Actor" and was also nominated for "Outstanding Younger Lead Actor" twice. In November 2013, Tom would reprise Billy's role as the character after 2008. In February 2014, Billy on Y&R appeared as Billy. Tom was dropped from the show and Billy's role was recast with primetime television actor Burgess Jenkins four months later.
In 2004, Tom portrayed Paul Cramer (the half-brother of Kelly Cramer, portrayed by his sister Heather) on ABC's One Life to Live, a role he played from March to October 2004. His character was pivotal to a year-long baby-switch storyline on One Life to Live and its sister title All My Children. In the Reese Witherspoon/Tobey Maguire film Pleasantville in 1998, he played Whitey, Tobey Maguire's foe. He appeared in the made-for-TV movie The '60s in 1999, as well as a small role in the CW television network's series Veronica Mars in 2006.
