David Joyner Life

David Eugene Joyner (born July 4, 1963) is an American actor.

He is best known for physically portraying Barney (with Bob West and later Duncan Brannan and Tim Dever voicing the role) from 1991 to 2001 on the children's television series Barney & Friends and its predecessor Barney and the Backyard Gang (in the last two videos).

He played Hip Hop Harry later on.

Early life

Joyner was born to Roscoe and Mary Joyner. He attended MacArthur High School and graduated with a degree in electronics engineering technology from the ITT Technical Institute in Indianapolis. For six years, he served as a software engineer for Texas Instruments.

Career

Joyner once said he had a nightmare the night before being auditioned to play Barney. Barney died in the dream, and Joyner was forced to bring his mouth to mouth resuscitation. And on the day of the audition, Joyner stopped at a red light and noticed a billboard above him for Southwest Airlines. "Breathe life into your vacation," it said. "I could breathe life into this character, I would go on vacation," Joyner said.

Joyner auditioned for the role in 1991, replacing Barney's original costume actor, David Voss. Joyner was originally intended to be the back-up performer, but the actress who had to be able to remain in the role for lengthy stretches of time.

Joyner was originally scheduled to appear Barney in two Barney & The Backyard Gang home videos, but she continued to act Barney in the TV series Barney & Friends during the first six seasons, as well as in live performances. He left to film Barney's Great Adventure after the fourth season's "Let's Eat" and was replaced with Josh Martin and Maurice Scott for the remainder of the season. In 1998, Joyner returned to Barney to perform Barney in Barney, outer space. Since he left the series, he continued to appear at least once a year until 2005.

At the time, he was replaced by Carey Stinson, who appeared at birthday parties in 1991 and then for public appearances beginning in 1992. In 1994, he began to appear in stage shows such as Barney Live in New York City as a peanut salesman and for his balcony scenes, Barney's Big Surprise, and Barney's Musical Castle Live! In the television series that began with the seventh season to 2022, then portrayed him fully.

Joyner also works as a tantric massage therapist outside of acting.
