He is also known for his two 1993 guest appearances on Shining Time Station, portraying nosy journalist Ted Typo. Hewlett first gained notoriety as Grant Jansky in the Canadian television series Traders (1996—2000) and as David Worth in the Canadian psychological thriller film Cube (1997).

He had appeared in Pin (1988) and The New Order (1991), both horror films.

Hewlett was a central supporting actor in Rise of the Apes (2011), depicting bad-tempered airline pilot Douglas Hunsiker opposite John Lithgow and Andy Serkis.

Early life

Hewlett was born in Redhill, England, and he and his family immigrated to Canada at the age of four. Hewlett received his first computer in his teens and became a self-described "computer geek." He began acting in Vincenzo Natali's student films while attending high school in Toronto. At the start of his acting career in 1984, he dropped out of high school in his senior year to pursue careers in acting and computing.

Hewlett developed Darkyl Media, a web site design company, and also founded Fusefilm.com, a now defunct internet community for filmmakers, before his film career began.

Personal life

Soo Garay married Hewlett in 2000, but the couple divorced in 2004. In 2008, he married Jane Loughman. They have one child. Kate Hewlett, Hewlett's younger sister, is the actress. Hewlett appeared in his critically acclaimed thriller Cube as Worth the architect in 1997. The low-budget Canadian film was extremely successful.

According to Hewlett, a life-long science fiction enthusiast, Doctor Who, a sci-fi program in his hometown, was what ignited his interest in the subject and that he created science fiction with his friends when he was younger in Britain, on his 8 millimeter camera. When Hewlett first had a four-episode guest appearance on the Canadian/American sci-fi film Stargate SG-1 as the Stargate agent Rodney McKay, which later evolved into his lead role in Stargate Atlantis, he realized his childhood aspirations to science fiction.

In 2007, Hewlett appeared as a guest star in the first episode of the TV series Sanctuary, which was created by and starring Stargate actress Amanda Tapping. Larry Tolson, a patient suffering from a form of psychosis who is shot and wounded before being arrested as a murder suspect, appeared in police detention as a murder suspect.

Paul McGillion, Christopher Judge, and Rachel Luttrell wrote and directed A Dog's Breakfast in 2006 starring himself, his sister Kate Hewlett, his dog Mars, and his Stargate Atlantis costars. Hewlett's Fanatical YouTube channel was established in July 2006.

Hewlett produced Debug, a supernatural horror-science fiction film starring Jason Momoa, who appeared alongside Hewlett in Stargate Atlantis in 2014. The film starred Jeananne Goossen and Adrian Holmes.

Hewlett appeared in the Syfy TV series Dark Matter, which is based on the same comic book. He appeared in Tabor Calchek, a retailer who also acts as the team's handler. Hewlett's filmmaking hobby persists.

He produced "HEWLOGRAM," a sci-fi comedy short that showcased Red Giant's filmmaking and special effects software.

He is on Twitch, and his son often appears with him. He also supports science education.

David Hewlett's channel on YouTube is a success.
