Early life
David Burke was born in Brooklyn, New Jersey, and he was raised in Hazlet, New Jersey.
In Plaisir, France, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and a student at Ecole Lenotre Pastry School. Burke worked with celebrated chefs in France and New York, including Pierre Troisgros, George Blanc, Marc Meneau, Daniel Boulud, Charlie Palmer, and Waldy Malouf. Burke's unsurpassed French culinary technique and his unique American creativity were unveiled at The River Café in New York City, receiving three stars from the New York Times. Burke was then selected by his peers to represent the United States at the International Culinary Exhibition, where he took home France's coveted Meilleurs Ouvriers de France d'Honneur, the first American to ever be crowned with this award. Burke also received the Nippon Award for Excellence in Japan for overall ability and technique. Burke was Executive Chef at The River Café until 1992.
Career
Burke opened the critically acclaimed Park Avenue Café in 1992 with Smith & Wollensky CEO Alan Stillman, who later became vice president of culinary development for the Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group four years ago. Burke ventured out on his own in 2003 to open davidburke & donatella, his first ever highly lauded restaurant. Burke's diverse and inventive restaurant designs have included establishments in Chicago, Foxwoods (CT), Las Vegas and Rumson (NJ), as well as New York. Currently, as the principal of David Burke Hospitality Management, he runs or controls the culinary direction of 15 restaurants in NC, NJ, NY, and Saudi Arabia, eight of which opened during the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020-2022. Burke went beyond the restaurant space with the acquisition of the 85-year-old Dixie Lee Bakery in Keansburg, NJ, in May 2022. Burke's long-awaited as a pastry chef and alumnus of the prestigious École Lenôtre Pastry School in Plaisir, France, has longed to owning a bakery.
Chef Burke has developed into one of television's most popular chefs, appearing on two seasons of Top Chef Masters, a guest spot on the Every Day with Rachael Ray show, NBC's small-business television series The Mentor, and more.
