David Bacon (born Gaspar Griswold Bacon, Jr., March 24, 1914 – September 12, 1943) was an American stage and film actor.
Early life
Bacon was born in Barnstable, Massachusetts, and his family was one of the most influential, politically active Boston Brahmin families. Gaspar G. Bacon, his father, was on the board of Harvard University and later served as Massachusetts lieutenant governor in the 1930s.
David Bacon, who was born to a life of privilege and wealth, attended Deerfield Academy and graduated from Harvard in 1937. He and his family spent the summers at Woods Hole, Cape Cod, where he was first involved in the "University Players" in the early 1930s. During his attempts to establish himself, he encountered James Stewart and Henry Fonda, who later shared accommodations.
Career
Bacon's acting career began to develop, but he stayed for many years. He moved to New York City, where he was sponsored by a wealthy British patron, and although he lost jobs, he began to wear expensive clothing and jewelry, fueling rumors that he was behaving as a gigolo.
He moved to Los Angeles, where he encountered and married Austrian singer and actress Greta Keller, who was eleven years older in 1942. Keller later revealed that Bacon was gay and lesbian, and that their lavender marriage partly served as what she described as a "beard," allowing both of them to keep their requisite façade in Hollywood, where they were both attempting to establish film careers.
Howard Hughes encountered Bacon in 1942 and committed him to a sole deal with the intention of portraying him in The Outlaw (1943) as Billy the Kid. The job was deemed inappropriate by bacon screen, which was found unsuitable. Despite Hughes' later decision not to use Bacon in The Outlaw, replacing him with actor Jack Beutel, the actor's replacement was allowed to keep Bacon to the terms of his deal, often as college boys. Keller argued that there was a homosexual relationship between Hughes and Bacon, and that she owed to Bacon's alleged friendship. Hughes, on the other hand, was well-known as a womanizer, and he was often the object of unscrupulous attempts to cash in on his money. Hughes later loaned Bacon to appear in The Masked Marvel (1943). The serial was produced with a low budget and marked a low point in Bacon's career, with Keller remarking that he was completely humiliated. It's still his best remembered work today.
