David Anthony Pirner (born April 16, 1964) is an American singer, guitarist, and producer best known as the lead singer and frontman for the alternative rock band Soul Asylum.
Early life and work
Pirner was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and graduated from Minneapolis West High School in 1982. He learned how to play the drums by himself. Pirner began drumming with Loud Fast Rules as part of the Minneapolis scene, along with Karl Mueller (bass) and Dan Murphy (guitar). Pat Morley joined the drums as Pirner switched to singing and playing rhythm guitar. Morley was later replaced by Grant Young, and the band renamed Soul Asylum. They developed a cult following of followers after touring the United States for a number of years, but not quite reached commercial success. Pirner was the band's songwriter and he produced the album, Coup De Grace, by the Minneapolis metal band Coup de Grace in 1990.
Personal life
Since being introduced at Soul Asylum's appearance on MTV Unplugged in 1993, Pirner began dating actress Winona Ryder. They broke up three years later.
Pirner lived in Bywater, Louisiana, for a time, and now has a house and recording studio in New Orleans. He also has a home in Minneapolis. Eli and his ex-wife have a son, Eli.
