Early life
Mooney attended the University of Southern California with his childhood friend Kyle Mooney, but he dropped out after his second year. McCary was present at the meeting with future Good Neighbor members Nick Rutherford and Beck Bennett.

Career
McCary formed Good Neighbor, a sketch comedy group formed by Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, and Nick Rutherford in 2007. Good Neighbor Showdown was just finished filming a Comedy Central pilot produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay via their company Gary Sanchez, prior to landing on SNL. According to reports, SNL had to work with Comedy Central to get them out of their employment so they could attend the long-running sketch competition. McCary produced the first two seasons of Epic Rap Battles of History during this period.
McCary joined Saturday Night Live in its 30th season as a segment editor, as well as Good Neighbor co-founder Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett, who joined as featured participants, and Nick Rutherford, who became a staff writer.
Brigsby Bear, a comedy-drama film made by The Lonely Island, was directed by McCary in 2017. Kyle Mooney, Mark Hamill, Greg Kinnear, Matt Walsh, Michaela Watkins, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., and Ryan Simpkins appear in the film.
