Darren Hayes Career

Music career

Hayes appeared in a Brisbane music magazine, Time Off, placed by Daniel Jones, for a lead vocalist position in the band called Red Edge in 1993. Despite his voice breaking in the audition, Hayes was a success, as he said in an interview with Rosie O'Donnell. Hayes and Jones formed a band first known as Crush in 1994, and the cover band, a duoband originally named Crush, formed a friendship with Jones. However, another band in the United Kingdom had the rights to the name before. Hayes and Jones sent their first demo tape to recording companies under the name Bliss before Anne Rice's book The Vampire Lestat introduced the world through Lestat de Lioncourt's eyes. The Savage Garden is a representation of Earth in which the world's natural laws govern anything aesthetic or civil.

Savage Garden's debut album was released in 1995 by producer Charles Fisher. They's first album, "I Want You," was released in 1996 and was the country's highest-selling single of the year. "To the Moon and Back" was Australia's second best-selling single at the time in 1996. The third single, "Reality Madly Deeply," was their second top-selling Australian single of 1997 and was the best-selling Australian single ever. Savage Garden, the duo's debut album in Australia, was the best-selling album on record in 1997, and the pair received ten ARIA awards.

Hayes and the Savage Garden Internationally travelled to New York City to promote Savage Garden internationally, while Daniel Jones stayed in Brisbane. The change was a success, with "Truly Madly" rising to the top of the American charts in 1998. On the back of this popularity, the Savage Garden album in the United States sold seven million copies.

Hayes wrote Affirmation in New York City. He had recently divorced his wife of many years. Parts of the album reflected the loneliness of the marriage's end. Affirmation debuted in 1999 and became another hit, with lead single "I Knew I Loved You" reaching the top of the country and the album selling six million copies worldwide by the end of 2000. At the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the pair performed on the album's title track.

In 2000, the Hayes went to Sausalito. He became the public face of the duo by doing the majority of the media. During a talk with an Australian journalist, Hayes revealed that Savage Garden had broken down in October 2001. Hayes hoped that the details would be saved for a future story, but it wasn't. Jones denied the band's break-up when confronted with this information during the early morning hours of an unrelated interview. However, Jones seems to have not been mistakenly quoting Hayes and denied there was any doubt about it. Nevertheless, Jones' involvement in all promotional efforts for Affirmation suggests that Jones was not content to remain in Savage Garden as it had before. By that time, Savage Garden had sold over 23 million albums. In a concert in 2000, Luciano Pavarotti and Darren Hayes performed "O Sole Mio."

John Woodruff, the current Savage Garden's boss, revealed that Jones had revealed his intention to leave Savage Garden before being promoted to Affirmation. Hayes' treatment in the media has been chastised by Woodruff. The pair have never released a joint statement on the situation, but Hayes has promised that the group will "never, by any chance" reunite, and that years later people will ask you to please return to the company if it cures cancer; "I once said that it would only do it if it cures cancer, and that's still how I feel."

Spin, Hayes' first solo album that was released in 2002, was his first solo album. Walter Afanasieff, the producer of Affirmation, was the album's designer. Spin continued in the same musical vein as Savage Garden, with less edgy R&B feel and more edgy R&B vibe, though the first single "Insatiable" debuted in Australia, peaking at number three. "Strange Relationship," "Crush (1980 Me)" and "I Miss You" were among the other singles to do well in charts. The album debuted at number 3 in Australia, and at number two in the United Kingdom. It also ranked in the top ten in Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. The album in the United States had no impact on Savage Garden's previous albums, reaching Number 35 on Billboard. It was later re-released with a bonus disc containing some live and studio tracks.

Hayes spent two years on his second solo album, The Tension and the Spark, which was released in Japan. Other than the track "I Forgive You" which was produced by Madonna collaborator Marius De Vries, Hayes and Robert Conley (with whom he has previously toured and recorded "Crush (1980 Me)" for Spin and "Do You Believe" for Specificus). Hayes' album represented a radical change in direction. Conley's production was almost entirely electronic, with acoustic instruments embedded in walls of sequenced sounds. Although Hayes received the most coveted accolade of his career, a substantial portion of his audience was alienated by the release of another album of radio-friendly pop songs. On July 12, 2004, the first single, "Pop!ular," was released. This single debuted at number one on the US Dance Charts, and it went well in the United Kingdom. "Darkness," Hayes' sequel to his debut on the ARIA top 50 charts, charted in the lower regions of the ARIA top 50 charts.

Clay Aiken's "When You Say You Love Me" was one of his out-takes from the Spin sessions, and he hasn't stopped recording him. Human Nature followed it, resulting in an Australian top 20 single on April 2004 off the Walk The Tightrope album, and then recorded in 2008 starring Hayes himself.

Hayes wrote "So Beautiful" with Robert Conley, which was included on the Savage Garden greatest hits compilation, Truly Madly: The Best of Savage Garden, 2005. "California" is Hayes' second track on the compilation. Both of these tracks hark back to Hayes' early days, while still retaining some of the spark's electronic flourishes.

Hayes revealed on September 9, 2006, that he had left Columbia Records after ten years and 24 million album sales together.

Hayes appeared in the historic Sydney Opera House on tour as a result of this tour. With Darren Hayes, the performance was captured and broadcast on a DVD titled A Big Night.

In 2007, Hayes released This Delicate Thing We've Made, his third solo album. The album was a double-disc with 25 tracks. Many of the tracks were co-written with Robert Conley, and a large portion of the album was written and produced by Justin Shave, who played keyboards on Hayes' Time Machine tour. The album was released on August 20, 2007, on Hayes' own independent record label, Powdered Sugar, while the first single, "On the Verge of Something Wonderful," was released in Australia on 28 July 2007 and in the United Kingdom and online on August 6, 2007.

Hayes unveiled the album track "Who Would Have Thought" from This Delicate Thing We've Made on his official website, as well as his MySpace profile on April 9, 2007. Richard Cullen's song was accompanied by an animation. Around April 2007, remixes of the album track "Step into the Sun" were being played in clubs around the world. On April 30, 2007, Hayes' official website and MySpace had the album version of "Step into the Light."

Hayes performed selected songs from the album in The Time Machine World Tour's first half of the year 2007 in small, exclusive gigs around the world. Following the fact that shows sold out in less than ten minutes, tickets for several of these shows were highly coveted. Hayes and the band Temposhark joined in New York, Toronto, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles in June 2007. With glowing feedback, the shows were well received.

Hayes headlined the London Gay Pride at Trafalgar Square on June 30, 2007. He performed "I Want You" and "On the Verge of Something Wonderful," as well as a medley that included "Pop!ular."

Hayes announced The Time Machine Tour in July 2007. The most popular music video on The Box in the United Kingdom on "On the Verge of Something Wonderful" on July 29, 2007. This Delicate Thing We've Made was released in the United Kingdom, America, and Australia on August 20th, 2007. 'The Time Machine Tour' featured venues such as The Royal Albert Hall and The State Theatre in Sydney. Willie Williams' stage was redesigned by Willie Williams and featured a massive bridge that could span the first few rows of seats. The performance was held in HD for a DVD release on the last night at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Hayes' hometown of Brisbane. The Time Machine Tour DVD came out in two versions: the special edition, which was limited to 2000 copies and contained a four-panel folding box, a thirty-page color booklet with 300 photos and notes from the artist, as well as the standard edition. On July 1, the special edition DVD, which was only available online, was delivered to customers, and on July, the regular version, which was still in stores, was released.

In November and December 2007, Hayes made a mini tour of the United States, appearing at Borders stores and performing two shows in New York City and Philadelphia.

Hayes introduced "The Side Two Tour" on December 18, 2007. In February 2008, the show toured the United Kingdom, with Hayes performing songs from "This Delicate Thing We've Made" that were not on "The Time Machine Tour" in a more personal setting. The DVD This Delicate Film We've Made was revealed in late 2008. Select songs from the album were arranged in a new sequence and introduced to animations that told a loose, abstract animated story. At number one in the UK music DVD charts, the DVD debuted at No. 1.

Hayes teased that he was planning another album on April 19, 2009, on Twitter. Hayes revealed on May 8th that he and Robert Conley had collaborated on an album titled We Are Smug, which he revealed on his MySpace page. The ten-track collection, which featured a fair amount of experimentation with both lyrics and music, was made free to download to determine Hayes' shifting musical styles. The album is heavily electronic with a few heavy beats on it. It also has some explicit material. On this album, Hayes and Conley perform vocal duties.

In August 2009, Hayes signed to Sony ATV Music Publishing for a worldwide release. Emma Banks from CAA UK joined Hayes in October 2009 to promote the bank's touring plans in the new album.

Despite the fact that the album was released before the holidays in 2009, Hayes revealed in early 2010 that he had more song ideas and that he was returning to the studio, which delayed the album another year. Hayes finished his fourth solo album in mid-2010, collaborating with top writers/producers from around the world and having Robert Orton's tune mixed.

He Will Have His Way, a compilation of "Not Even Close," Hayes also recorded a song for Finn's tribute album He Will Have His Way. On Halloween 2010, it was announced.

Hayes reported on April 17, 2011 that he had signed a landmark deal with Mercury Records/Universal Music Australia and joined EMI Services UK/Europe. In October 2011, he debuted his fourth studio album. In May, the first single titled "Talk Talk Talk Talk" was announced and was released on June 24. The single features a cover version of Madonna's "Angel" as the B-side.

On June 20, Hayes' Facebook page revealed that his new album would be called Secret Codes and Battleships.

On July 22nd, Hayes revealed on Twitter that he was shooting his second music video from the album. In a radio interview on August 14, he revealed that "Black Out the Sun" will be the second single from Secret Codes and Battleships. Since its inception in the United Kingdom, BBC Radio 2 has selected the track to feature on their A list for the week beginning 1 October 2011. On Twitter, he later announced that this song will be the single for the United Kingdom and other international markets, while "Bloodstained Heart" will be Australia's second single. Hayes appeared on "The Secret" Tour in the United Kingdom and Australia, beginning on October 15 in Liverpool. Hayes announced on March 2nd that he would film another music video the next week. "Stupid Mistake," the album's fourth single, was released in May 2012. He later confirmed that the music video was shot for "Stupid Mistake," which was released as the album's fourth single.

Hayes hasn't been to work on a stand-up comedy career since 2013. At the same time, he was posting short singing videos for his followers on his social media pages. Hayes said in a 2022 interview with Queerty that he had no intention to resign at that time. Hayes briefly appeared on stage in 2018 with a one-off performance of two songs, including "I Knew I Loved You." Hayes appeared on Cub Sport's "I Never Cried So Much in My Whole Life" in 2019. He did not appear in the official video. He released a new version of "fully Madly Deeply" in 2020 with slightly altered lyrics. On April 24, YouTube's video of his studio appearance was posted.

Hayes' single, "Let's Try Being in Love" was released on January 26, 2022. The song's music video was released the same day as starring Hayes and star Scott Evans. Andrew Putschoegl narrated the video. Hayes described the NME's as a "queer anthem" for nearly 17 years in promotional interviews, adding "I've been married to Richard [Cullen] for almost 17 years [and] I'm in this really cozy place in my life." But at the same time as midlife, I'm mourning the fact that I never got to celebrate who I really was at a time of my life when I was most popular. I took a look at the world we live in today, where someone like Lil Nas X can bring forth his authentic self, full of pride, and self-love, and he has aspired to be admired for who he truly is [...] A lot of the time I was the most mournful. "Let's Try Being in Love" debuted at number 96 on the Official UK Singles Download Chart Top 100 and at number 98 on the Official UK Singles Sales Chart Top 100, less than 24 hours since its introduction. The single debuted at number nine on the Australian Independent singles chart, putting it at number nine. "I wanted to express how much I love the feminine in me, not to be proud of the gay me." There's a dance scene that is so passionate, and everything is flourishing and blooming. That's how I feel about music in general. And this is a drastic change from how I felt ten years ago.

Hayes confirmed he would be headlining the 2022 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade on January 27, 2022, and would perform on March 5, 2022. For the first time, Hayes performed "The Animal Song," "I Want You," "Affirmation," and "Let's Try Being in Love" plus.

Hayes' Do You Remember? on March 2nd, 2022, Hayes revealed the Do You Remember? Six Australian cities will be featured between January and February 2023, with tracks from his musical career as part of Savage Garden and as a solo performer. Hayes released the single "Do You Remember?" on March 10, 2022. "The official video on March 16, 2022, accompanied the official footage." Hayes wrote "Poison Blood" in June 2022, which chronicles his struggle with depression and those that are impacted by it. On June 20, 2022, Hayes released the official "Poison Blood" music video, as well as announcing UK Tour dates on the same day. On July 20, 2022, a remix of "Let's Try Being in Love" was released, with production directed by Louis La Roche. "Do You Remember?" Roche's remix to "Do You Remember" was followed on July 29th. "It's been a while since "Irma" was released.

Hayes announced on August 18th, 2022, that Homosexual, his fifth studio album, would be out the same year. On August 20, 2022, a fourth single, "All You Pretty Things," was released. Hayes said on October 7th, 2022, "My new album was born out of a desire to get rid of the pain I suffered from over the years I lost to shame growing up in a world where being gay was greeted with skepticism and condemnation. I wanted to revisit my teenage years with the wisdom of a proud 50-year-old gay man, reminiscing my youth experiences and seeing them through this new peach-tinted lens of joy. I imagined an adolescence in which I could be adored for who I truly am today. My aim was to reclaim my joy and reclaim my identity through this music. "I had the confidence to look deep inside myself and examine old trauma from the perspective of an effervescent endless summer." Homosexual debuted at number 6 on the Australian Digital Albums and number 16 on the Australian Artist Albums Chart, ranked sixth. The album debuted on the UK Albums Chart, as well as on the UK Download and Album Sales charts, lands at number 3 and 13, respectively.
