Danny Burstein Life

Danny Burstein (born June 16, 1964) is an American actor of stage and film who made his Broadway debut in 1992.

He is a six-time Tony Award winner, best known for Drowsy Chaperone (2006), South Pacific (2008), Follies (2012), Golden Boy (2013), Cabaret (2014), and Fiddler on the Roof (2016).

He has also received three Grammy Award nominations, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, and three others.

The Seagull (1992), Saint Joan (1993), and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (2010) are among his Broadway credits. Burstein's television appearances include a feature-length episode of Absolutely Fabulous (2002); a Staten Island father in the first season of Louie (2010); he appeared as different characters in six episodes of the original NBC drama series Law & Order (1995–2015); currently recurs as D.A.

Lewis Cormier on Evil (TV series) and Lolly Steinman on HBO's Boardwalk Empire (2010–11).

Transamerica (2005), Deception (2008), The Family Fang (2015), and Indignation (2016) were among his film appearances. In the stage version of Moulin Rouge, Burstein is currently playing Harold Zidler. On Broadway.

Early life and education

Burstein was born in Mt. Kisco, New York, was born in New York City and was raised in New York City. When Danny was two months old, his parents separated. He was raised by his mother, Virginia (Vega), a painter, and his stepfather, Harvey Burstein, a Greek philosophy professor, and a Greek philosophy scholar. His mother, who is from Costa Rica, is Catholic and of Spanish descent, and his stepfather, who is from Costa Rica, is Jewish. He was not raised in any particular faith and observed both Jewish and Christian holidays.

Burstein attended the High School of the Performing Arts. He spent his entire season in high school performing in community theatre and summer stock in New Hampshire. He graduated from Queens College in New York City, where he began his first professional acting work in the chorus of The Music Man at The Muny in St. Louis. In 1990, he earned his MFA from the University of California's graduate acting program. He appeared in Macbeth at the La Jolla Playhouse during his time in drama school at UCSD.

Personal life

Burstein was married to actress Rebecca Luker from June 2000 to her death on December 23, 2020. Alexander and Zachary, his two sons from a previous marriage, and live in Morningside Heights, Manhattan.

Burstein and several other cast members contracted COVID-19 in March 2020, following the shutdown of all Broadway theatrical performances, including Moulin Rouge!, in which he appeared, as well as several other cast members. He was later hospitalized at St. Luke's in Manhattan's Morningside Heights section, and recovered. In a column published in The Hollywood Reporter, Burstein discussed his encounter with the disease. In August 2020, he wrote about continuing challenges with his post-COPD recovery while caring for his wife, who had ALS.

Buddy Plummer appeared in the Kennedy Center production of Follies, which ran from May 7, 2011, to June 19, 2011, co-starring Bernadette Peters, Ron Raines, and Jan Maxwell. He revived his role in Follies' Broadway debut from August 7, 2011 (in previews) to January 22, 2012, and continued with the production at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California, from May 3, 2012 to June 9, 2012. He was voted for the Best Actor in a Musical by the Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, as well as the Tony Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical.

Burstein can be seen on the cast recording of several of these musicals. Among his many recordings is the musical Sweet Little Devil, in which he performed three George Gershwin, Buddy DeSylva songs. The score was first recorded in 1924 and then released by PS Classics, with Burstein portraying Sam in 2012.

Burstein has appeared in a number of video games, including Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Manhunt 2, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Neverwinter Nights 2.

Burstein has served on the Kennedy Center Honors' Artists Committee and has lectured at many universities, including Yale, NYU, Juilliard, UCSD, and Queens College.

In the 2015 Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof directed by Bartlett Sher, Burstein played Tevye. The revival began in previews on November 20, 2015, and officially opened on December 20, 2015, and closed on December 31st, 2016.

In the Park production of A Midsummer Night's Dream in the summer of 2017, Nick Bottom appeared as Nick Bottom in the New York Public Theater's Shakespeare's Summer.

In the Broadway revival of My Fair Lady at Lincoln Center Theater beginning in January 8, 2019. On Broadway in Moulin Rouge, he also performed Harold Zidler on stage. In 2019, the United Kingdom had a new president.

Moulin Rouge!

The Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston, from July 10, 2018, to August 19, 2018, hosted its pre-Broadway performances. Burstein was named Best Featured Actor in a Musical in 2021 by Moulin Rouge's Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

In 2021, he was nominated for an Audie Award for his narration of Stephen King's If It Bleeds.
