Career
Florek earned a living role in such 1980s films as Sweet Liberty, Moon Over Parador, and Angel Heart. He also played Mr. Slate in The Flintstones' live-action film version.
On 22 episodes of NBC's hit drama L.A., beginning in 1988, Florek played Dave Meyer, the husband of Susan Ruttan's character, Roxanne Melman. Florek appeared in numerous episodes of Roseanne as the high school gym coach.
Florek co-starred in the NBC police procedural and court drama television series Law & Order as Capt. Don Cragen is a singer who sings.
The first few years of Law & Order had poor ratings, and then, after the conclusion of the 1992-1993 season, NBC informed creator/executive producer Dick Wolf that unless they brought a few women to the all-male cast, they would cancel the low-rated program. Florek and Richard Brooks, the sole non-white cast member (who appeared in Paul Robinette), were reluctantly dismissed by Wolf, who then replaced them with S. Epatha Merkerson and Jill Hennessy, respectively. However, Florek was allowed to direct a few Law & Order episodes in 1994 and 1995.
In the 1995 TV movie "Bad Faith" (which he also directed), Florek revisited the role of Cragen, and the 1998 TV-movie Exiled concentrated on former L&O actor Chris Noth's character, Mike Logan. He returned to the Cragen role in 1999, but this time as the titular unit's captain. Florek was written out of the series during its 15th season, and his final episode aired on January 15, 2014. In the 21st episode of season 16, he reprised his role. Olivia Benson, the unit's current captain, appeared in the 500th episode of SVU. In an episode of the SVU spin-off Law & Order: Organized Crime, reunites Cragen with his former detective Elliot Stabler, which is also expected to air in April 2022. In the 2nd season finale, he will also appear.
