Club career

Danilo Barbosa, a native of Simes Filho, Bahia, joined Vasco da Gama's youth program in 2011, after starting it out at Vitória. On September 26, 2013, before making his debut as a senior, he was sold to Gestifute for a €4.5 million fee and was assigned to S.C. Braga, with the change only becoming effective in July 2014.

Danilo Barbosa was named in the cruzmaltino's main squad in January 2014 and made his senior debut against Edm'lson in a 1–0 home victory over Botafogo for the Campeonato Carioca championship. He made his Série B debut on April 19th, beginning in a 1-1 home draw against América Mineiro.

Danilo Barbosa joined Braga on July 3, 2014. He made his club debut against C.D. on September 20th, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1–1 Primeira Liga away draw against C.D. Nacional. In a 2–1 victory over S.L. on October 26, he was dismissed. Benfica de la Estádio Municipal de Braga. In a 1–2 away loss against C.S., Danilo scored his first professional goal on January 3, 2015, netting the first in a 1–2 loss. Martimo is a character in the film The 18th was his second on the 18th in a 3–1 success at Vitória de Setbal, with one surviving one on the 18th. When he was available, an undisputed starter piqued the attention of other clubs.

Danilo Barbosa made his La Liga team Valencia CF on loan on July 15, 2015, with the ability to purchase at the end of the season. He made his debut in the first game of the season on August 22nd, playing the entire game at Rayo Vallecano. He joined Benfica on a season-long loan contract on July 28, 2016. Since Benfica was unable to notify him at FPF in time, Danilo missed the Supertaça match. On October 14th against 1o de Dezembro, he played his first game for them, scoring the first goal and winning by 2–1. His loan spell at Benfica was cut short and he was transferred to Standard Liège for the remainder of the season after only five appearances with two starts, both in the Taça de Portugal. He appeared in six games, starting two. Danilo returned to Braga after two seasons on loan, finishing fourth in the Primeira Liga, before moving to Nice on June 10, 2018.

Danilo signed a Botafogo deal on August 2022, well before the end of 2025.

International career

Danilo Barbosa was a student at several universities in Brazil. He was called up to the under-20s for the 2011 FIFA Under-15 Football Championship and the under-17s in the 2011 South American Under-15 Football Championship and the under-17s.

Danilo Barbosa began playing captain in all matches of the former tournament. In a 2–1 victory over Hungary, he scored his team's first by a header, and his team was also named in the competition's Silver Ball, with his team finishing second.
