Club career

Baselli was born in Brescia and joined Atalanta's youth service in 2000, aged 8. He was promoted to the Primavera of the 2010-11 season, scoring five goals in 22 league games. He has also appeared on the bench for the first team in both Serie B and Coppa Italia.

He was sold to Cittadella in a no-cost initiation deal, for which he made his debut in Coppa Italia's 1–2 loss. On August 27, he made his first appearance in the league, beginning with a 2–1 win over AlbinoLeffe. He made 13 appearances in the league, with 10 as a starter, in the 2011–12 season.

He remained in Veneto the following season, while playing his first game in Coppa Italia and 37 in the league, and scoring his first goal in a home victory over Ascoli on May 18, 2013.

He returned to Attalanta on June 20, 2013 after the Bergamo team purchased the other half of the player's rights for €803,500, with Cittadella selling the player's rights for €803,500 less. He signed a four-year contract with Atalanta and made his club debut on August 18th, playing the last 17 minutes and assisting Giuseppe De Luca in the last goal of a 3–0 home win over Bari.

Baselli started as a second-half replacement in a 2–0 home win over Torino on September 1; he was handed his first appearance in Italian football in a 0–2 loss to Napoli. On 10 May 2015 in Palermo, he scored the 1–0 against the Rosaneri, marking his first goal in Serie A.

He was sold to Torino on July 10, 2015, in the same deal that brought Davide Zappacosta and Piedmont together for a total of €10.3 million. Baselli scored Torino's first goal in a 4–1 victory in his competitive debut against Pescara on August 17th in the third round of Coppa Italia. Torino beat Frosinone 2–1 on August 23rd in Serie A for the first time in history. He reached his high point in the 2014–15 season with 35 appearances and four goals.

In a 3–2 loss to Milan at the San Siro on August 20, 2016, he scored his first goal of the 2016–17 season. With 37 appearances and six goals, he ended the season on a high note. He renewed his Torino deal until 2022 on July 12th, 2017.

Baselli continued to play as a starter for Torino in the 2017-18 season, first under new Torino boss Sinia Mihajlovi and later under Walter Mazzarri. During a 2–2 draw at the Stadio San Paolo against Napoli on May 6, 2018, he captained Torino for the first time. He played for Torino for three seasons and scored four goals, earning his first call-up to Italy's national football team.

He makes his UEFA club debut against Debreceni VSC (3-0) on July 25, 2019, in his fifth season with Torino. He was with Torino for another two and a half seasons, but he had trouble finding playing time due to various injuries and technological choices.

He was sold outright to Cagliari on January 28, 2022.

Baselli joined Como on a free transfer on August 9th, 2022.

International career

He appeared in two friendly matches with the Italy under 18 in 2009. In the match that lost 3–0 against Turkey on September 24, 2009, he made his under-19 debut with the under-19 team.

He made his under-21 debut in the friendly match against Spain, winning 1–0. Devis Mangia won a friendly against Germany the following Friday, but did not play. He started as a starter in the Azzurri 4–1 friendly match against Slovakia on August 14, 2013. He started as a starter under Luigi Di Biagio in the match against Belgium on Friday, qualifying for the 2015 European Under-21 Championship qualifiers.

He was called up by coach Cesare Prandelli from 10 to 12 March 2014 as part of an internship to assess young athletes ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He appeared in the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in the Czech Republic.

Baselli played his first senior cap in an 8–0 loss to San Marino in an unofficial friendly match on May 31, 2017, for Italy's national football team. He started the game and lasted 45 minutes before being replaced by fellow debutant Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Baselli was called up by coach Roberto Mancini to the Italy senior national team for the team's friendlies against Saudi Arabia, France, and the Netherlands on 19 May 19. In a 1–1 friendly draw against the Netherlands in Turin on June 4, he made his official debut for the Italy senior team, coming on as a second-half replacement for Jorginho.

In his debut in Como's dugout, Cesc Fabregas won, beating a 10-man Feralpisalo at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigalia.
