Daniel Handler Life

Daniel Handler (born February 28, 1970) is an American writer and singer.

He is best known for his children's book A Series of Unfortunate Events and All the Wrong Questions, which is available under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket.

In 2004, the former was turned into a Nickelodeon film, as well as a Netflix series from 2017 to 2019. Handler has also published adult novels and a stage play under his real name, as well as other children's books under the Snicket pseudonym.

Many publishers have turned down his first book, a satirical fiction work titled The Basic Eight, due to its obscure subject matter.

In several bands, the handler has also played accordion.

Life

Handler was born in San Francisco, California, the son of Sandra Handler (née Walpole), a former City College of San Francisco dean, and Louis Handler, an accountant. His father, a Jewish immigrant from Germany, was a refugee. His mother is vaguely related to British writer Hugh Walpole. "I had a pretty standard Reform Jewish upbringing, I guess, in terms of the religious facets of it," Handler said of his early religious upbringing. Rebecca Handler, he's younger brother, has a younger sister. He attended Commodore Sloat Elementary, Herbert Hoover Middle School, and Lowell High School. In 1992, he graduated from Wesleyan University. He was given the 1992 Connecticut Student Poet Prize, which he said he received by ripping off Elizabeth Bishop. He is a member of the San Francisco Boys Chorus.

Since childhood, Handler has been a voracious reader. Edward Goy's first book he acquired as a youth was The Blue Aspic, of whom he is a fan. William Maxwell and Roald Dahl's writings were a hit.

He is married to Lisa Brown, an illustrator he encountered in college. They have a child who was born in 2003. They live in San Francisco's Edwardian home.

Handler has expressed reservations about his wealth and the apprehension it creates. He regularly contributes to charitable causes. Planned Parenthood has also contributed $1,000,000, and Handler and his wife have all endorsed the Occupy Wall Street campaign.

Handler is both a secular humanist and an atheist. When in college, he claims to have developed a "feminist attitude."

Lemony Snicket author slams attempts to censor 'offensive' Roald Dahl books as he insists children should read about 'wretched things'

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 29, 2024
Children need to read about 'wretched' things and not be protected from 'offensive' words, best-selling author Daniel Handler (inset top) has said. The Lemony Snicket (right, Jim Carrey as Count Olaf in the 2004 film A Series of Unfortunate Events) writer has hit out at publishers rewriting Roald Dahl's (inset bottom) books to make them more 'inclusive' by removing words such as 'fat'. The 54-year-old said he understands the 'urge' to remove offensive language but condemned the 'tinkering' of the BFG and Witches (left) author's work. The A Series of Unfortunate Events writer said Dahl's work was 'offensive' - and it should be kept this way. Dahl, who sold 300 million copies of his work, wrote children's classics including James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Twits.

Lemony Snicket author behind Jim Carrey's $211 MILLION movie A Series of Unfortunate Events exposes secret behind-the-scenes scandals - and the shocking antics of 'raving lunatic' execs who made his life hell

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 9, 2024
Two decades after the Jim Carrey and Catherine O'Hara -led film was released, writer Daniel Handler is now accusing movie executives of chewing him up and spitting him out, denying him his fee, and laying bare his accounts of bitter behind-the-scenes tensions on the big-screen hit. In his upcoming memoir, And Then? And Then? What Else?, the author talks for the first time about being fired and rehired, while accusing producers of cheating him out of a fee as Paramount Pictures worked so desperately to adapt the bestselling books for the big screen.
