Caesar's debut album Freudian debuted in August 2017, which also received widespread critical praise. He had been building his following independently after the debut of two critically acclaimed EPs Praise Break (2014) and Pilgrim's Paradise (2015).
Life and career
Ashton Dumar Simmonds was born on April 5, 1995, in the Scarborough district of Toronto, Ontario, and raised in Oshawa. Hollace and Father Norwill Simmonds, a pastor and gospel singer who released his first album as a high school student in Jamaica, is the second eldest of four children to his mother Hollace and his father. Caesar attended the Seventh-day Adventist Church and private school in Oshawa. He is of Bajan and Jamaican descent.
Caesar grew up in church, performing at his father's congregation in Oshawa. Even though his parents were suspicious of temptations that came with music, he was exposed to soul and gospel through musicality and faith. Caesar longed for the city, although it was an hour away from his house.
Caesar was kicked out of the house after a fight with his father on the weekend of his high school graduation; he was briefly homeless at the time. He had no choice but to continue his calling as a guitarist. Since leaving his house, he began doing gigs. Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett, producers, and future collaborators, all joined him and began writing and recording what would be released by his debut EP Praise Break in 2014; it was No. Rolling Stone and Noisey Canada's top projects of 2014 19 on the "20 Best R&B Albums of 2014" by the 19th century.
Caesar's career began in 2015 with the unveiling of Pilgrim's Paradise, his second EP. The album received critical acclaim, and, although not immediately a commercial success, tracks like "Streetlights" became sleeper hits.
Caesar's debut album Freudian, which also includes the singles "Get You," "We Find Love," and "Blessed" on August 25, 2017. The album was a shortlisted finalist for the 2018 Polaris Music Prize. Caesar received two awards for Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance for his album "Get You" at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. Caesar received the Best R&B Achievement Award for his single "Best Part" at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. Caesar appeared alongside American singer-songwriter Giveon on his second album, Justice, which became his first chart-topping single on the US Billboard Hot 100, on March 19, 2021.
