Daniel Ash Life

Daniel Gaston Ash (born 31 July 1957 in Northampton, England) is an English musician, songwriter, and singer.

He rose to fame in the late 1970s as the guitarist for Bauhaus's legendary goth rock band Bauhaus, which spawned two related bands led by Ash: Tail and Love and Rockets.

He and bandmate Kevin Haskins reunited to form Poptone, a retrospective of their respective careers, with Kevin's daughter Diva Dompe on bass.

He has also released several solo albums.

Several guitarists have cited Ash as a influence, including Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction, Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, and John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, among others.

Life and work

Ash wanted to perform on a stage in some way after attending concerts in his youth. He started playing guitar at the age of 15, but admitted to being extremely lazy and learning only three chords, nothing more. He started playing in cover bands, often with future band members David J and Kevin Haskins, whom he had known since nursery school. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, where he played in the Glasgow Workman's Club for the first time.

During his youth, Ash met Peter Murphy as a mentor. Ash went to art school and Murphy went to work in a printing factory. They met up again five years later, and Ash suggested starting a band. Ash performed an Echo 12 – bar blues, while Murphy performed a series of newspaper articles. They began Bauhaus and recorded "Bela Lugosi's Death" four weeks later.

Despite being a "dark glam" band and having always distanced themselves from the gothic label, the album, which was released in 1979, became one of the most popular gothic rock songs in gothic rock music. He was keen on being original from the start and often tried to "not make the guitar not sound like a guitar." By using an EBow, he was able to create a guitar style with other-worldly and atmospheric sounds. For his stage gear, he has used a Telecaster guitar, HH amplifiers, and Marshall 4x12 cabinets. Later in his career, he heavily relied on the Fernandes Sustainer system to produce sounds similar to the EBow.

Bauhaus's brother Kevin Haskins, a veteran of almost five years of recording and performing, has died, and Ash formed Tones on Tail with Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins. "We were a motley crew of people who essentially wanted to look like a band from Venus or Mars," Ash described them. Tones on Tail was disbanded in 1984; Ash founded Love and Rockets with Haskins and David J, both of Bauhaus. Ash elishedly said that he had no more plans to compete with Love and Rockets in a interview in June 2009.

Ash has claimed that guitar solos aren't particularly interesting to him because they are reliant on a musician's ego. Rather than focusing on guitar or any other single instrument, he cares more about the art of songwriting and the overall production of a song. He has been playing more with electronic music, with Love and Rockets and solo, limiting the use of guitar as an additional feature in the songs over the past ten years. However, since Bauhaus's last revival, he has been returning to a more guitar-based rock sound.

Bauhaus released Go Away White in 2008 (their first studio album in 25 years) which was followed by a world tour.

The Love and Rockets were among the last acts to perform at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in 2008.

Ash released a cover of David Essex' "Rock On" in June 2009, starring singer Zak Ambrose on vocals. The track is from the Swing House rehearsal and recording complex in Hollywood, and it's a Swing House session on Vol 1 EP. Ash's "It's A Burn Out" was a four-song EP released exclusively on iTunes later this year.

Diva Dompé, Daniel Ash, Kevin Haskins, and Haskin's daughter announced Poptone and a US tour in March 2017, which featured songs by Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets and Bauhaus.

Ash formed Ashes and Diamonds in 2020, including Paul Denman on bass, previously of Sade, and Bruce Smith, the former drummer with The Pop Group, Rip Rig + Panic and Public Image Ltd.

In 2022, Ash performed Jane's Addiction's "Jane Says" and "Slice of Life" by Bauhaus in Madison Square Garden.
