Dane Gagai (born 3 January 1991) is a professional rugby league footballer who plays for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NRL as a centre, fullback, and winger.

At the international level, he has competed for Australia and New Zealand Maori. He competed for the Brisbane Broncos and Newcastle Knights in the National Rugby League before.

In the State of Origins series and the Prime Minister's XIII, he has performed for the Indigenous All Stars, Queensland.

He was the Originator of the series in 2017.

Dane Gagai Career

Playing career

Gagai played for the Brisbane Broncos' NYC team from 2009 to 2011, scoring 39 tries in 61 games. He was named fullback in the 2010 NYC Team of the Year and played for the Junior Kangaroos against the Junior Kiwis at the end of 2010.

Gagai scored a try against the North Queensland Cowboys on the wing in round 1, making his NRL debut for the Brisbane Broncos against the North Queensland Cowboys.

With 4 tries in 6 matches, Gagai completed his debut in the NRL for the first time. He was also selected in the NYC Team of the Year, this time on wing.

On 19 March, Gagai resigned with Brisbane on a two-year deal. He was dismissed from the job on May 9th due to discipline reasons. Gagai signed a two-year deal with the Newcastle Knights on May 28th, beginning immediately. In Round 14 of the 2012 NRL season, Gagai made his Newcastle Knights debut against the Canberra Raiders at centre, scoring a try in the Knights' 32-16 loss at Hunter Stadium. With 12 matches and 5 tries, Gagai completed his first year in the Newcastle Knights.

Gagai re-signed with Newcastle on a two-year deal on May 22. He finished the season with 23 matches and scoring 5 tries. In August, Gagai dropped out of playing for New Zealand in the 2013 Rugby World Cup and instead aimed for Queensland in State of Origin.

Gagai was barred from the Queensland Origin camp by Mal Meninga on January 28 for a discipline breach. Gagai was selected in the Knights' inaugural Nines squad in February. He was accepted in the Queensland Maroons' expanded 22-man squad in June, but he was later not selected to make his Queensland debut. Gagai appeared in all of the Knights' 24 matches, winning 7 wickets and kick a goal.

In the 2015 NRL Auckland Nines and the Indigenous All Stars match, Gagai appeared on the interchange bench for the Knights and the Indigenous All Stars. The Indigenous team defeated the Chinese side 20–6.

After a strong desire from his former club, the Brisbane Broncos, he re-signed with Newcastle on a two-year deal on April 10th. In Game 3 of the 2015 State of Origin series, he made his State of Origin debut on the wing for Queensland, scoring the first time of the game in Queensland's 52–6 win. He completed the 2015 season by playing in all of the Knights' 24 matches, scoring 7 tries and kicking 2 goals as the club finished last.

On September 26, he played for the Prime Minister's XIII against Papua New Guinea, playing at center in his team's 40–12 victory in Port Moresby.

Gagai appeared for the Indigenous All Stars against the new World All Stars on February 13th, 2014, playing on the wing and scoring a goal in his team's 8-12 loss at Suncorp Stadium.

Gagai played his 100th NRL game against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in round ten against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, defeating them 0–62 at Hunter Stadium. He was seen on camera clinging and being embraced by teammate Tariq Sims after the match. "I'm right there at the end, but I don't think I've ever seen the likes of that in any of my time watching rugby league," Fox Sports analyst Andrew Voss commented on the event: "I'm not sure I've ever seen the likes of that in all my time following rugby league." "Dane Gagai couldn't contain himself." This is a round ten game. Have you ever experienced that in your life? "They were spectacular photographs," Smith said. "That is a remark you may not get." Gasnier said he was "shattered." Following the occurrence, Gagai was subjected to racial shaming by a crowd member. Earlier that day, it was revealed that Gagai was mourning because of his grandmother's death.

In Game 1 of Queensland's 6–4 victory at ANZ Stadium and a hat-trick of tries in Game 2 in Game 3 of the 2016 State of Origins series, he appeared in all three matches for Queensland on the wing, where he scored 1 try in Game 1 in their 6–4 victory over Suncorp Stadium and a hat-trick of tries.

Newcastle finished last on the table with 22 games and scoring 3 tries as he ended the season on the table for the second year in a row.

In the 34–8 victory, Gagai made his third appearance for the Indigenous All Stars, beginning on the wing and scoring a goal.

Gagai announced on June 10 that he had signed a four-year contract with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, which was announced on May 10.

Gagai received the Wally Lewis Medal as the player of the 2017 State of Origins series on July 12th. In Game 2 of the series-tying 18–16 victory at ANZ Stadium, Gagai, who was on the wing for Queensland in all three games, scored 2 tries and ran for over 500 meters for the series. He became the first winger to win the official Player of the series.

Newcastle finished last for the third year in a row, with Gagai starting 23 matches and scoring 2 tries. He was selected in Australia's 24-man World Cup squad on October 3rd. In the 18–4 win at AAMI Park on October 27, Gagai made his international debut against England against England, playing on the wing. Gagai scored his first international try in Sydney's 34–0 victory. In the Kangaroos' 6-0 World Cup Final victory over England at Suncorp Stadium, Gagai played in 5 matches and scored 3 goals in the tournament, including starting on the wing.

In round 1 of the 2018 season, Gagai made his club debut against the New Zealand Warriors, playing at center for South Sydney's 20-32 loss at Perth Stadium.

In round 9 against his old club Newcastle, he scored his first try for Souths, who defeated them 36–18 at McDonald Jones Stadium. As he had Torres Strait Island and Maori roots, Gagai was eligible to play for both representative teams during the 2018 All-Stars match at AAMI Park in Melbourne, Australia. After being selected to the Maori All-Stars Team, Gagai was then named.

Before the 2019 NRL season, Gagai decided to play for New Zealand Maori kiwis against the Indigenous Australian All Stars, and he scored two goals in the game.

In Queensland's 18–14 victory at Suncorp Stadium, Gagai scored 2 tries and claimed man of the match in Game 1 of the 2019 State of Origin series. Gagai finished with 256 run metres, two linebreaks, three tackle breaks, and 11 tackles after the match. South Sydney defeated the game 20-16 after the final siren had sounded in round 19 against St. George. Gagai scored two tries as Gagai won the match 20-16.

Gagai completed the 2019 NRL season by playing 25 games and scoring 10 tries. He appeared in the club's preliminary final loss to the Canberra Raiders, but the club came close to losing out on a grand final appearance for the second year in a row.

South Sydney defeated the Gold Coast 32–12 at Bankwest Stadium in round 5 of the 2020 NRL season. Gagai scored two tries. Souths defeated Canterbury 26-10 at Bankwest Stadium in round 8, Gagai scored the match winning try for the first time. Souths defeated the West Tigers 18–10 at Bankwest Stadium in round nine, Gagai's first NRL hat trick.

Gagai scored a try in round 18 against the Wests Tigers but was later suspended for throwing the ball at Wests player Luke Brooks. Brooks retaliated punching Gagai in the chest before the pair exchanged punches igniting an all-in brawl. Souths will take the match 26-24.

With 19 appearances and 11 tries, Gagai completed the season. Souths lost in the club's preliminary final loss to Penrith, his third year in a row.

In round 12 of the 2021 NRL season, Gagai scored a hat-trick in South Sydney's 38-20 victory over Parramatta. It was revealed on August 9 that Gagai had signed a three-year contract to rejoin Newcastle in 2022. During South Sydney's 52-12 victory over the Sydney Roosters, Gagai was sent to the sin bin in round 24. In the 2021 NRL season, Gagai played in a total of 23 games for South Sydney, including the club's 2021 NRL Grand Final loss to Penrith.

During Queensland's 22-12 victory, he was sent to the sin bin for punching New South Wales player Matt Burton during Game 3 of the 2022 State of Origin series. Following Newcastle's 42-12 loss to the Sydney Roosters, Gagai was sent to the sin bin for protesting in round 19 of the 2022 NRL season. In round 24, Gagai scored two tries for Newcastle, who lost by 26-36 to the Gold Coast. In 2022, Gagai played a total of 20 games for Newcastle, finishing 14th on the tableopim.
