Personal life
Fox was born in Brighton, New York, and now lives in Los Angeles, California. On October 23, 2010, Fox married Quinn Emmett at Historic Jamestowne in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Career
Fox graduated from Stanford University in 1998 with a BA in English and art history and went on to University of Southern California (USC), where she participated in the USC School of Cinematic Arts' Peter Stark Producing Program and graduated in 2000. She had intended to become a film producer but when she was given a homework assignment at USC to write a 30-page screenplay, she discovered she enjoyed writing more and decided to become a screenwriter instead. When they were constructing the Superman television series Smallville, she became an assistant to writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, and then worked for writer-director John August.
Jessica Bendinger, the Gough and Millar's agent, was looking for an unpublished writer who would work inexpensively on a screenplay. Fox had not yet produced a sample screenplay, but Bendinger was so impressed with her script that Fox was hired to write the script. The Wedding Date was a produced film that was ultimately panned by critics but that was nonetheless a financial success. She was attached to three separate writing assignments right after the wedding date's publication. What Happens in Vegas, which was acquired by 20th Century Fox in a high six-figure contract for the script's first draft, stars Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher in her next produced screenplay. After What Happens in Vegas was purchased, Fox produced rewrites on 27 Dresses (2008) and Knight and Day (2010), earning one of Variety magazine's "Top Screenwriters" of 2007.
Fox produced a half-hour comedy for FOX based on her older brother in 2012. Ben and Kate, the show, premiered on September 25, 2012.
Fox is a good friend of fellow writers Diablo Cody (Juno), Lorene Scafaria (Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist), and Liz Meriwether (No Strings Attached), who works together in a writing group they're calling the "Fempire." The Athena Film Festival awarded the "Fempire" Award in 2012 for Creativity and Sisterhood.
