In 1986, he co-starred opposite Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster in Tough Guys, giving him his big break. Carvey qualified for the hosting role on Nickelodeon's TV game show Double Dare. After being cast on Saturday Night Live, he eventually pulled his name from consideration. Marc Summers will be in charge of the job.
Carvey made a name for himself in 1986 when he joined the cast of NBC's Saturday Night Live. He, along with newcomers Phil Hartman, Kevin Nealon, Jan Hooks, and Victoria Jackson, all helped to reverse the show's declining success and made SNL "must-see" television again. The Church Lady, the uptight, smug, and pious host of Church Chat, was a vital component of the show's revival. When growing up, Carvey based the tale on women he knew from church, who would keep track of other churchgoers' attendance. He became so attached to the role that later cast members, such as Chris Farley, referred to Carvey simply as "the Lady."
Garth Algar (from Wayne's World), who was based on his brother; Hans ("from "Hans and Franz"); and Ching Chang, a Chinese poultry store owner, were among Carvey's other original characters. He was the designated impersonator of the president during the campaign and presidency of George H.W. Bush, making him the leading actor of the regular political sketches on SNL.
Carvey also did an impression of independent candidate Ross Perot during the 1992 US presidential election campaign; in a prime-time special before the election, Carvey portrayed both George H. W. Bush and Perot, portrayed by Phil Hartman. "Why don't you do it, live-boy," Perot, who stood out and timed to give the appearance of interacting with the live Bush and Clinton opening line, told Bush, "Why don't you do it, live-boy?" Carvey appeared on SNL in 1993.

In 2002, he returned to film in The Master of Disguise, a spy drama. The film was released a week after former colleague Mike Myers' hit film Austin Powers in Goldmember, but most analysts compared the films and sluggishly sluggish Carvey's effort. Nevertheless, the film did gross $40 million at the North American box office. Rotten Tomatoes, a review website that aggregates reviews, rated the film as the 18th worst-reviewed film of the 2000s decade, with a approval rating of 1% based on 103 reviews. Michael J. Nelson, a comedian and former Mystery Science Theater 3000 host, named the film as the third worst comedy ever produced. Carvey did not appear in a film again until 2011's Jack and Jill. It has also been described as one of the worst comedies of all time. Little Nicky was his first appearance in another Adam Sandler film.
He ranked 90th on Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time in 2004.
Carvey's fame soon gave way to a focus on his family. He later admitted in an interview that he did not want to be in a profession in which his children would already be grown with him having not invested time with them, which was a big factor in his departure from Late Night's hosting position, which eventually went to Conan O'Brien. During a 2016 Howard Stern interview, Carvey said he prefers stand-up comedy to acting in films and regularly appears in lucrative corporate dates.
