Dan Reynolds Career

Career

Reynolds was initially reluctant to be a professional musician, partially because Wayne Sermon, his future bandmate, told him: "Don't do music because you want to do dance, do it if you must do music." Reynolds found that he could not "do something else" and committed fully to a professional music career after starting Brigham Young University. Reynolds met and recruited drummer Andrew Tolman to form Imagine Dragons in Utah. Imagine Dragons won BYU's "Battle of the Bands" and other local competitions with Reynolds as lead vocalist. Bassist Ben McKee joined the Las Vegas band after Tolman's departure in 2011 and invited Daniel Platzman, also a friend of Wayne's from Berklee College of Music, to play drums, effectively ending the band's current lineup. The band then moved to Las Vegas, where they began performing almost every night as a lounge act. When Train's frontman, Pat Monahan, collapsed sick right before the Bite of Las Vegas Festival in 2009, they missed their first big break. Imagine Dragons were sent to assist them and performed in front of a crowd of over 26,000 people. They signed with Interscope Records in November 2011 and began working with Grammy award-winning producer Alex da Kid.

On September 4, 2012, the Imagine Dragons' debut studio album Night Visions debuted. The album was preceded by their first single "It's Time," which was released on August 18, 2012. In 2012, 2013, and 2014, Night Visions charted in the top ten albums in the United States. It received a Billboard Music Award for Best Rock Album and was nominated for the International Album of the Year. "Radioactive," the album's second single, debuted at No. 1. It also broke the all-time record for longest time on the Billboard Hot 100, with 87 weeks, a record that would not be broken until the Billboard Hot 100's smash single "Blinding Lights" charted for an 88th week in August 2021. It was described by Rolling Stone as "the year's best rock hit." It's the best-selling rock song in digital history, with sales of over 7.5 million copies in the United States, and it has been designated Diamond by the RIAA. "Demons," the third single, debuted at No. 2 on the charts. With orders in excess of 5 million copies in the United States, it is the eighth best-selling rock song in digital history, with sales in excess of 5 million copies in the United States. Imagine Dragons were nominated for two Grammy Awards, Record of the Year, and Best Rock & Video Achievement; the former was chosen for the second. They also received two AMA Awards for Best Alternative Artist, a Teen Choice Award for World's Best Rock Actor, and a Billboard Music Award for Top Rock Artist. The band made their big festival headlining debut at the Made in America Music Festival in 2014, as well as receiving large audiences and glowing feedback at festivals such as Lollapalooza Brazil in 2014.
