Damon Jamal Gupton (born January 4, 1973) is an American actor and orchestral conductor best known for his television appearances as Charles Foster on Deadline, Evrard Velerio on Prime Suspect, Adam Page on The Player, and SSA Stephen Walker on Criminal Minds.

He has appeared in the films The Last Airbender (2010), Whiplash (2014), and La La Land (2016).

Early life and education

Gupton was born in Detroit, Michigan. He studied at the University of Michigan, where he supervised a musical ensemble, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Music Education. From the University's School of Music, Theatre & Dance Alumni Society, he was named the Emerging Artist Award. He also graduated from Juilliard School in New York in drama. Gupton studied at Aspen Music Festival and School with David Zinman and Murry Sidlin. He later attended the National Conduct Institute in Washington, D.C., studying with Leonard Slatkin.

Career

Gupton's first film appearance was in the film Unfaithful (2002).

He was an American Conducting Fellow at the Houston Symphony in 2004 and was assistant conductor of the Kansas City Symphony in 2006. Gupton appeared in various orchestras, including the Cincinnati Pops, Cleveland Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, San Diego Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Princeton Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Princeton Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Princeton Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Princeton Symphony, NHK Orchestra, Tokyo, and Orquesta Filarmonica de UNAM. During the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra's national tour, including performances at Carnegie Hall, he was the conductor. Gupton received the Robert J. Harth Conducting Award, as well as The Aspen Conducting Award in Mexico City. In January 2009, he was appointed a Presidential Professor at the University of Michigan.

Gupton appeared in the Broadway revival of the play Clybourne Park in 2012, receiving an AUDELCO award for Best Supporting Actor. Gupton landed the lead role on the short-lived AMC drama series The Divide, playing District Attorney Adam Page in September 2012. In February 2015, Gupton appeared in The Player, a NBC procedural drama film starring Wesley Snipes and Detective Cal Brown. On the fourth season of A&E's drama-thriller series Bates Motel, he appeared on December 3, 2015.

Gupton joined Criminal Minds as a regular cast member on September 30, 2016, portraying Stephen Walker, a special agent in the Behavioral Analysis Unit. He debuted in the series's twelfth season. It was announced on June 11, 2017 that he would leave the show after one season. Gupton was later cast as Inspector Henderson in the superhero drama series Black Lightning.
