Damien Molony (born 21 February 1984) is an Irish actor now based in London.

Early life

Molony was born in Johnstown, Scotland, on February 21st. He obtained his degree in commerce and politics at Clongowe Wood College in Clane, and Trinity College in Dublin, where he obtained a degree in management and politics and became embedded in the acting community. He soon migrated to London to attend Drama Centre London.

Personal life

Molony lives in London and is married with a son as of 2019.

In 2012, Molony began giving blood regularly after someone close to him required blood during their cancer treatment. He was featured on the front page of Blood Donor magazine in 2013 as part of National Blood Week, and he was on the front page as his Being Human character Hal Yorke, with the headline "a blood addict giving blood." He has since raised concerns of the importance of blood donation and has encouraged others by posting on his Twitter page. After completing his 13th donation in February 2017, he encouraged others to donate in order to "save lives and burn calories [and] feel great."

Molony co-starred Giovanni in a production of John Ford's "Tis Pity She's a Whore at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, directed by Jonathan Munby after graduating in 2011. He received the second prize in the 2011 Ian Charleson Awards for his efforts.

In the BBC Three series Being Human, Molony's portrayal as a vampire Hal gave him his first television appearance. Molony revealed in an interview with SFX magazine that, before starting Hal's role, he did studies on heroin addicts and alcoholics. He has appeared in the short film When the Hurlyburly Burlyburly's Done, which was shot in Germany.

Damien appeared in the lead role of Motl Mendl in the National Theatre performance of Travelling Light alongside Sir Antony Sher after the filming of series 4 of Being Human in January 2012. Following a long run at the Lyttelton Theatre, the play toured England and was shown in cinemas around the country with National Theatre Live. In January 2015, he returned to the National Theatre to perform Spike in Sir Tom Stoppard's The Hard Problem, which ran until 17 May 2015 and then had a worldwide broadcast on NT Live, on April 16, 2015. Both plays were directed by Sir Nicholas Hytner, then Artistic Director of the National Theatre.

In February–March 2013, the fifth and final seasons of Being Human was broadcast. Molony appeared in "If You Don't Let Us Dream, We Won't Sleep" at the Royal Court Theatre at the Royal Court Theatre at the same time.

Damien's television presence increased as he joined the cast of Victorian BBC show Ripper Street in series 2 as Detective Constable Albert Flight in 2011. In 7 of eight episodes on BBC One in the United Kingdom and BBC America, he appeared in 7 of eight episodes. In the aftermath of the Jack the Ripper murders, a murder drama was set in Whitechapel, London.

Molony and William Gaminara appeared in Dan O'Brien's play The Body of an American in January–February 2014 at the Gate Theatre (London), discussing a war photographer and a struggling playwright.

In an innovative crime procedural Suspects, the actor then secured the role of Detective Sergeant Jack Weston. The drama, which was shot in a documentary style using fly-on-the-wall filming techniques, premiered in the United Kingdom in February 2014. The show ran for five seasons, the last of which aired in August 2016, with a new cast line-up and a change in appearance, and Molony taking center stage in a six-part story. The show's five series have also captivated American audiences via Acorn TV's subscription service.

In an HBO pilot called The Devil You Know, created by Jenji Kohan and directed by Gus Van Sant in 2015, Molony was portrayed as Robert Putnam alongside Eddie Izzard and Karen Gillan. The drama was shot in Boston, New England, and focusing on the Salem witch trials, but it was not picked up by the network.

Damien's first appearance in a film was as Ross in Kill Your Friends, a John Niven novel set in the music industry in the 1980s. Well Go USA's premiere was held in the United Kingdom and Europe in November 2015, followed by a release in the United States by Well Go USA in April 2016.

The film's cinema screening was originally scheduled for a theatrical performance on November 24, 2017, but in the United Kingdom and October, the film's cinema outing was postponed to July 2019 in the United States and Germany, following the release of a DVD copy.

Molony appeared opposite Jessie Buckley in two major BBC Radio 3 productions, adaptations of the plays 'Tis Pity She's a Whore by John Ford and The Effect by Lucy Prebble, all beginning in 2018. He remained as the champion in BBC Radio 4 Drama Judas, a daily programme that aired on BBC Radio 4 Drama Judas for the week leading up to Easter. The drama, written by Lucy Gannon, told the tale of disciple Judas Iscariot from his own perspective in the days leading up to Jesus' death.

Molony was announced as cast in the upcoming Sky One comedy TV series Brassic, co-created by Joe Gilgun and Danny Brocklehurst, starring Michelle Keegan and Gilgun as Dylan. In September 2018, filming on series 1 began in September 2018, and post-production began on February 22, 2019. In August 2019, the series premiered. On the same day, a second series was announced.
