He signed on loan for Aston Villa in 2007, making the move permanent in 2008.

He signed for Hull City in 2013 and then moved to Derby County in 2017.

Curtis Davies Career

Club career

Davies started training with Wimbledon at the age of 15. He was released a year later. He wrote to every club in the immediate region, including Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Queens Park Rangers, Tottenham Hotspur, and Millwall, requesting a trial. Colchester United came first, two weeks before any other club, and a trial was offered; after a few trial matches, he was released. A trial was scheduled for Luton Town. He scored two goals in three games and was awarded a scholarship straight away during the trial. In 2003, he made his first-team debut.

Davies appeared in Luton's league from 2003 to 2004, with the away performance at QPR particularly strong. Davies earned his first promotion in 44 league games for the Hatters, scoring his first senior goal in the title-clinching victory over Wrexham. Davies was named League One Player of the Year and joined five Luton teammates in the League One PFA Team of the Year, as well as winning Luton Town's Young Player of the Year award.

Davies only played six games and one goal in his last game, away from Millwall, before his outstanding performances earned him a new deal with Premier League club West Bromwich Albion on August 31 for a fee of £3 million.

Davies made 35 starts and scored two goals in his first season with Albion, which culminated in the club being relegated to the Championship. He pledged his future to the club by signing a new four-year contract and was named captain on a permanent basis, captained the team on several occasions during the previous season to become the club's second youngest captain of all time. After being suspended for two yellow cards for threats against Middlesbrough striker Mark Viduka, he was dismissed for the first time in February 2007. He broke a metatarsal in Albion's match against Crystal Palace, putting him out for the remainder of the season and leaving him out of selection for the first match at the new Wembley Stadium, an England under-21 international, in which he had been named in the squad. Nevertheless, he was selected in the PFA Championship Team of the Year for 2006-2007.

Davies had his transfer request turned down by West Brom on June 21 and resigned as captaincy. Davies refused to leave unless the club's appraisal was satisfied, but the asking price was too high for a player who had "been part of a relegated squad." Albion revealed on August 30 that Davies had been given permission to talk to Aston Villa about a potential change.

Davies signed for Aston Villa on loan for the season from August 31, 2007, with a intention of a permanent transfer in 2008. He made his Villa debut in a 1–0 League Cup loss to Leicester City on September 27th and compared his results to that of a pub team player.

Davies made his Premier League debut with Villa in a 2–0 home victory over Derby County on November 3rd, and scored on his first Premier League debut, beating Wigan Athletic in December. He then became a regular in Villa's back four, but at the expense of Zat Knight.

Davies sustained a ruptured achilles tendon against Arsenal on March 1st, 2008, and was estimated to miss at least six months.

On July 3, 2008, Davies signed a four-year contract with Aston Villa to make the transfer permanent. The fee was undisclosed, but it was reported between £8 million and £11 million. In April, Villa boss Martin O'Neill said he "didn't] want to see him back before October or November time," but Davies was able to start Villa's UEFA Cup match against Fimleikafnarfjar on August 14th. In the 1–0 UEFA Cup victory over Slavia Prague on November 6, he captained Aston Villa for the first time. In January 2009, he scored his first goal of the season, leading his team to a 2–1 victory over West Bromwich Albion. Davies decided not to celebrate the game out of love for his former team.

Davies began the season with a 2–0 loss at home to Wigan Athletic, who The Guardian's reporter called it "shambolic defense and unwillingness to play with any cohesion." In which Davies "looked fearless every time Wigan attacked," the game began. On the contrary, Davies scored the second of Villa's three goals away from Liverpool with a header from a corner kick in the first half, triggering what BBC Sport's reporter referred to as "an outstanding defensive effort." In September, Davies' recurrent shoulder pains necessitated surgery. Villa brought in defenders James Collins from West Ham United and Richard Dunne from Manchester City during his absence. Stephen Warnock was brought back to action in the FA Cup match against Brighton & Hove Albion on January 23. O'Neill rejected a bid by Celtic for match fitness in order to improve match fitness, arguing that the club could not afford to lose Davies' services for the whole season. He made no further appearances on the first team.

Davies was delisted in the summer of 2010. Martin O'Neill resigned from his role at the club in August. Davies told journalists that O'Neill had not given him a fair chance and that a new boss would give every member of the squad a clean slate. Davies appeared just twice before joining Leicester City on a month's loan on October 15th. It was his first league match he had played in in a dozen months against Hull City the next day. Davies continued to play regularly until returning to Aston Villa after his loan was due to be terminated in January 2011.

Davies signed for Birmingham City on a three-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee on January 28, 2011. He was given the squad number 32. In the 2011 League Cup Final, Davies was cup-tied for Birmingham's victory. In a 3–1 home loss to former West Bromwich Albion in March, he made his first-team debut in a 3–1 loss, losing his first game in the first round to the injured Martin Jiránek. Birmingham's first goal for the club came when he opened the scoring with a header from a Jordon Mutch corner on 6 August 2011 as Birmingham continued to lose 2–1 at Derby County. Davies made a good play from behind in Birmingham's first match in major European competition in over 50 years, against Portuguese club Nacional, which lost goalless, on Thursday's first leg.

Davies was released on June 25, 2013, under new Premier League player Hull City on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee, according to BBC Sport, "understood to be around £2.25 million." He made his debut on the first day of the 2013-14 season with a 2–0 loss at Chelsea, and scored his first goal for the club against Cardiff City on September 14th. Davies was named Player of the Year at the annual awards ceremony on May 7, 2014 at the KC Stadium. He got his team 2–0 up after starting in the FA Cup Final against Arsenal on May 17th and scored to put his team 2–0 up, but Hull lost 3–2. Davies signed a two-year contract extension to his club contract on March 16, 2016.

Following Hull's demotion from the Premier League, Davies signed a two-year deal with Derby County in July 2017. Davies failed with injury in his first season, first with a hamstring injury that allowed Richard Keogh and Fikayo Tomori to return as starting center-backs and then with a ruptured Achilles tendon that kept him out for the second half of the season. Keogh sustained a serious knee injury in a car crash in September 2019, which was punishing two colleagues with drink driving. Davies regained both his starting position and captaincy against Birmingham City, which was blamed on alcohol use.

Davies was offered a new deal with the club at the end of the 2020-2021 season, but no deal was reached and Davies left the club on July 2021. Davies rejoined the club in August 2021, but the EFL encouraged Derby to sign out-of-contract players whose salary limits were adhered to. Despite Derby's relegation, Davies received accolades throughout the year and was one of the top candidates among Derby fans for the Player of the Season award. With Chris Kirchner's takeover, the supporters' hopes for a new deal for Davies. Davies signed a 1 year contract to extend his stay until 2023, as the 2022 outbreak was announced on July 8th.

International career

Davies made his England under-21 debut against Norway's U21s on February 28, 2006. He was capped three times by the England under-21s from 2006 to 2007. In January 2008, Fabio Capello's first provisional England squad was named. Davies' call-up shock had initially surprised him. He was also named in England's squad to face Germany in November of this year, but did not play.

Davies is also eligible for the Republic of Ireland through his grandparents, and it was confirmed that the FAI had contacted him about the possibility. He later revealed that his grandmother was born in Ireland while her English father was serving in the army, so he has no Irish roots. If he is unable to make it to the England squad, he went on to say that if he would like to play for the country of his father, Sierra Leone.
