Career
Melvin began working as a "Our Generation Reporter" for Columbia, South Carolina, from 1995 to 1997.
He returned to WIS in July 2001 as a news photographer and producer before joining the station's morning news staff and executing his "Craig Cam" live segments. He was later promoted to news anchor for the weekend morning newscast and the evening newscasts before heading to the weekday newscasts. Melvin, among other things, created several series that were devoted to education and the homeless in Columbia.
Melvin left WIS-TV to join NBC's owned-and-operated station in Washington, D.C., where he anchored the weekend evening newscasts.
Melvin left WRC-TV for MSNBC in July 2011 to become a daytime anchor while also contributing to NBC News as a reporter. Melvin anchored MSNBC's coverage of the national conventions for the Republican and Democratic parties, as well as TV One's Election Night coverage in partnership with NBC News. In December 2012, he covered the Sandy Hook shootings. He covered the Moore tornado in May, as well as the crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 and the George Zimmerman trial in July. Melvin covered Michael Brown's shooting in August and Hannah Graham's murder in September. He covered the Charleston church shooting in 2015 as well as the death of Freddie Gray in June. Melvin covered the mass shooting of Dallas police officers in July and was also one of the NBC journalists covering the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August. José D.Balart, the former president of MSNBC Live, then MSNBC News, succeeded him the same year.
