Coral Smith Career

Career

Smith, a 21-year-old part-time student and nanny, was living in San Francisco when she decided on a whim to audition for MTV's long-running reality TV series The Real World and Road Rules. Two dozen of the candidates were chosen together for a casting competition leading up to the selection. Smith became in conflict with finalist Ellen Cho during her time at the casting house. Smith was eventually selected as a cast member of the tenth season of The Real World, which will be held in New York, the first season of the program since 1992.

During Smith's time on The Real World, which aired in 2001, she came into conflict with Mike Mizanin over claims she owed to Smith from his uncle, who said black people were poor and uneducated. Despite Mizanin's attempts to dismiss the remarks as merely those of his uncle, Smith, and their other housemate, Malik Cooper, who are both black, were offended. Coral and the other housemates continued to educate Mizanin about black culture, as well as Malcolm X's life.

Smith claims she was the "bitch" of her season, not lack of likability, despite the fact that every season of The Real World includes cast members in archetypal roles.

Smith went to work at a rape crisis center after filming The Real World.

Smith has appeared on six seasons of the spin-off series Real World/Road Rules Challenge and made it to the final mission for four of the Challenges. Smith's partner, Evan Starkman, developed an abdominal hernia during Fresh Meat. Smith herself sustained a leg injury, and the show's designers barred them from the competition. This was Smith's first attempt, but she did not make it to the final mission.

During Battle of the Sexes 2, a lot of curiosity and speculation has arisen over Smith's connection with Abram Boise from Road Rules: South Pacific. In reaction to a question raised by an MTV rep. Smith, Smith replied: "I'm a fan."

Smith also stated in another interview that she and Boise were not involved in a marital relationship, and that any appearance of that sort was engineered through selective editing on the part of the show's designers in order to elicit ratings.

Smith appeared on Battle of the Network Reality Stars in 2005. Smith appeared on Camp Reality, the Fox Reality reality show, in January 2007. Smith appeared on The Gauntlet III in January 2008. She voluntarily left the Challenge at the end of the year. This was Smith's second attempt in which she did not make it to the final mission. Smith explained that she left because she was unable to tolerate what she perceived as disreputable conduct by her peers at the end of the season, an assertion that was corroborated by teammate Katie Doyle.

Smith appeared on the first Real World Awards Bash on April 2, 2008, winning the award for the "Roommate You Love To Hate" category. Smith appeared on on-air aftershows and the season's reunion show in 2013.
