Colt Brennan Life

Colton James "Colt" Brennan (born August 16, 1983) is a former American professional football quarterback.

He was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft, but was released two years later.

He played college football for the University of Hawaii Warriors. He holds the NCAA Division I record for most touchdown passes in a single season with 58.

He holds several other NCAA Division I FBS records.

Early years

Brennan attended Mater Dei High School in California. He helped Mater Dei advance to the league championship in basketball as a senior. While at Mater Dei, he was the backup quarterback to Matt Leinart until Leinart graduated. After graduating from Mater Dei, Brennan attended Worcester Academy in Massachusetts for a postgraduate year, where his primary receiver was David Ball, who later would break Jerry Rice's college record for touchdown receptions in Division I-AA.

Personal life

Brennan was a communications major. On December 16, 2007, Brennan received his Bachelor of Arts in communications and a 27-second standing ovation. Hawaii-based venture capitalist Barry Weinman wore Brennan's No. 15 jersey while delivering the commencement address at the 2007 graduation.

His cousin Brent Brennan is a college football coach who has been the head coach at San Jose State since 2017.

On November 19, 2010, Brennan was hospitalized and listed in serious condition after he was a passenger in a car crash in the Big Island of Hawai'i. The accident left him with a traumatic brain injury, broken ribs and collar bone, which according to his family affected him emotionally in the following years. He was released from Queen's Medical Center on November 27, 2010 and headed to his parents' home in Southern California to continue his recovery. He described his injuries in 2014:

Colt Brennan Career

College career

Brennan first enrolled in Colorado in 2002 as a walk-on. He started the year as a redshirt.

Brennan was admitted to the dorm room of a female CU student, who was uninvited, on January 28, 2004, and the perpetrator, "exposed himself and fondled her," a charge that Brennan denied. Brennan, who was intoxicated at the time, was arrested and eventually found guilty of criminal robbery and trespassing (he was sentenced to one week in prison in conjunction with probation until he graduated from college), but the court has suspended a guilty verdict for unlawful sexual contact, but the court refused to provide evidence. Brennan was ordered to take a polygraph examination of the incident that resulted in the death of the person and passed. He reported those findings to Saddleback College President Richard McCullough later that day. He was kicked out of the team following the incident, which occurred during a time when CU was being investigated for sex crimes and wild recruiting parties involving several athletes.

Brennan then transferred to Saddleback College in California and helped the school win the conference championship. He was named honorable mention JUCO All-America, state offensive player of the year by the JuCal Transfer, and first-team all-conference for his efforts in that season. He revived his image well enough for University of Hawaii head coach June Jones to give him a walk-on experience. Brennan turned down an invite from San Jose State in order to put some distance between himself and his past experiences and interested in Jones' quarterbackship.

Brennan joined Hawaii in 2005 and quickly earned the starting quarterback position. He appeared in ten of 12 games, the only games he did not start against was against USC and San Diego State. In what was a fruitful first season with the Rainbow Warriors, he tied or broken 11 school offensive records. He led the country in total offense yards (4,455) and touchdowns (35). His 4,301 yards passing is the eighth-most in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) history. He had career-high passing yards (515), touchdowns (7), and pass completions (38) against New Mexico State. On the season, he had nine 300+ yard games, including four 400+ yard games and a 515-yard effort.

Brennan was named to multiple award watch lists in 2006 and named the WAC's preseason offensive Player of the Year. He led the nation in scoring and passing efficiency in the regular season and gained 72.1 percent of his passes, the highest in Division I-A.

Brennan also recorded 53 touchdowns in the regular season, falling just 1 touchdown shy of the NCAA Division I-A single-season record (set in 1990 by David Klingler of Houston). Brennan threw for five touchdowns at the Hawaii Bowl on December 24, 2006. (Statistics also counted against new records during the offseason.) The team finished second in the WAC after Boise State in an 11-33 record and finished second overall.

In the 2006 Heisman Trophy poll, Brennan came in sixth, behind Troy Smith, Darren McFadden, Brady Quinn, Steve Slaton, and Mike Hart. Brennan finished with 5,549 yards and 58 touchdowns, both of which were school records, and had the highest passer efficiency ratings in the country during the season. "Colt is a money guy," Jones said. Colt is, as I said, America's best college quarterback, and he did a good job tonight." Brennan announced that he would return to the University of Hawaii for his senior season during a press conference on January 17. He didn't feel confident for the NFL and needed another year to get ready. He returned to Hawaii as a front runner for Heisman and one of the NCAA's most prolific passers. He was rated one of the top ten quarterbacks in the 2007 season by Rivals.com.

He set a new school record for touchdown passes on November 23, 2007, to then No. 10's five touchdown passes. 17 Boise State. In the first quarter, he threw a record-breaking 122nd touchdown pass to Ryan Grice-Mullen, breaking the record set by former BYU quarterback Ty Detmer in 1991. Brennan also set a record for the most touchdowns with 136. In the final game of the regular season, the Hawaiians defeated Washington 35–28, defeating him at No. 7 for the first time in the 2007 season. On the AP Top 25, the No. 10 is in contention for the 2007 BCS Sugar Bowl, defeating the No. ten in a match. The Georgia Bulldogs were ranked 5th in the Georgia Bulldogs poll.

The Sugar Bowl was a one-sided match as Georgia defeated Hawai 41–10. Brennan completed 22-of-38 for 169 yards while throwing three interceptions. Georgia was able to properly apply pressure throughout the game, forcing Georgia to pull eight men into coverage, allowing Georgia to drop eight men into coverage. Brennan's all-time passer efficiency rating was lowered this game compared to the previous game. Later, he was quoted as saying, "This is not how I want my career to come to an end." He had 38 touchdowns and 17 interceptions on the season. Brennan was chosen for the second year in a row as a Heisman trophy champion, this time finishing in third place behind Tim Tebow and Darren McFadden. He was invited to play in the 2008 Senior Bowl, where he suffered a torn labrum in his right hip during the first day of practice. He also managed to participate in the game.

June Jones, Brennan's coach, had a major influence on his career and made him one of the most prolific passers in NCAA Division 1 history. "He's obviously done a lot for me," Brennan said of Jones in a short interview on January 6, 2008, and that's what I was really looking for." He made me feel confident enough to push my game to the next level and gave me the confidence to play like an All-American." During his sophomore year, Jones was instrumental in the introduction of Brennan to Hawaii.

Professional career

Brennan was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round (186th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft. He was the tenth quarterback to be drafted in the draft. On July 14, he agreed to a four-year, $1.8 million deal.

Brennan was playing in his first NFL preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts on August 3. In the Redskins' victory, he was impressive on his debut, posting 9-of-10 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns for a 157.5 passer rating. Brennan's success against the New York Jets continued two weeks later when he finished 4-of-5 passes for 79 yards and threw the game-winning touchdown on a 33-yard pass to wide receiver Jason Goode. He led all 2008 NFL rookies in touchdown passes (three), passing yards (411), and quarterback rating (109.9). For a completion rate of 67.9%, he went 36-for-53 with no interceptions. He carried the ball twice for 11 yards twice. In the regular season, he had no game time.

Brennan was put on medical reserve on September 4, 2009, putting his 2009 season to a halt due to a torn hamstring injury and a hip injury. The hip injury was similar to one he suffered while in Hawaii's college and needed surgery. Brennan was recalled by the Baltimore Ravens quarterback John Beck on August 2, 2010, making him expendable. He was then released.

Brennan signed with the Oakland Raiders on August 7, 2010. He was suspended on September 4 after not playing in a regular season game in the NFL.

Brennan signed with the Hartford Colonials in the United Football League in the 2011 season on June 3, 2011. On August 10, 2011, the Colonials' operations were suspended. Brennan was not chosen by any of the four remaining UFL teams in a dispersal draft released on August 15, 2011.

Brennan signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League on February 28, 2012. The announcement was widely distributed online and attracted a lot of attention in its aftermath. Despite being supposed to be the back-up, the Roughriders later signed former NFL journeyman J. T. O'Sullivan, putting Brennan down in the depth chart. Brennan was released on June 11, 2012.

Brennan was drafted to the Los Angeles Kiss of the Arena Football League on October 29, 2013. However, he was forced to miss the Kiss on March 8, 2014 after being diagnosed with a brain injury resulting from a 2010 car accident (see below). Brennan's romance with the Kiss became the subject of the first episode of 4th and Loud, a reality television series about the team.
