Pennie, a born in Brooklyn, New York, began his career as a member of the NBC's hit drama Law & Order and as a heroin-addicted robber on Una Trace. His television work piqued the attention of Ford Model Management, who referred to Pennie as the head of a lucrative "ck one" fragrance campaign for Calvin Klein.

Pennie is a student at the University of Los Angeles, New York, and Atlanta. Though not on camera, the majority of his time is spent dancing, writing, and mastering his numerous crafts.

In a three-day limited engagement at the Hollywood Bowl, Pennie appeared in Rent with actors Neil Patrick Harris and Wayne Brady. Pennie's prolific dance career earned him the lead male role in Beyonce's "Run the World (Girls) video, which was released May 18, 2011.

Pennie has continued to film, appearing in Ryan Fleck's award-winning Half Nelson (2007) opposite Ryan Gosling and Shareee Epps. He appeared in Prom Night (2008) and Fame (2009), an adaptation of the 1980 cult classic. Collins was the lead actor in Stomp the Yard: Homecoming, where he portrayed Chance Harris, a college student trying to strike a balance between his school, work, family ties, and the opportunity to compete in the national step competition in 2010. Collins appeared on television as part of the hit series hospital drama Hawthorne, where he appeared alongside Jada Pinkett Smith and Michael Vartan. In addition, Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, and Cillian Murphy appeared in the Fox Feature film In Time. In early 2013 Collins made his return to television in Regina King's directorial debut, Let The Church Say Amen. The film was based on ReShonda Tate Billingley's 2005 book of the same name. This film, directed by King Latifah's Flava Unit Company, was produced by Royal Ties, the company King's sister, Reina King.

Pennie made his television debut on the long-running NBC crime drama Law & Order in 2004. He has appeared on other television shows, including Without a Trace, and appeared in Marcus Leeds in the hospital drama Hawthorne.
