Jost returned as one of the show's co-head writers from 2012 to 2015; he also served as one of the show's head writers in 2017.
Early life
Colin Jost was born and raised in New York City's Grymes Hill neighborhood, and the older of two sons. Kerry J. Kelly, his mother, and his father, Daniel A. Jost, are both retired teachers at Staten Island Technical High School, and his father, William A. Jost, is the chief medical officer for the New York City Fire Department. Casey Jost, a writer and a producer of Impractical Jokers, has one younger brother who appeared in Staten Island Summer.
He was raised Roman Catholic and attended Regis High School in Manhattan, where he was the editor of the school newspaper The Owl. He studied at Harvard University, majoring in history and literature with a focus on Russian literature and British literature, and he wrote his senior thesis on Vladimir Nabokov. In 2004, Jost received the award for the first time from Harvard.
He was president of the Harvard Lampoon while at Harvard. He also won $5,250 on a college version of Weakest Link, but said he did not deserve to win, not because he deserved it.
Personal life
While the two were roommates with 2020 Democratic presidential nominee Pete Buttigieg, they were interning in Leverett House at Harvard. Jost contributed to Buttigieg's mayoral reelection bid in 2015. Jost portrayed Buttigieg in the 45th season of SNL, laterally during Buttigieg's presidential campaign.
In May 2017, Jost began a friendship with actress Scarlett Johansson. In May 2019, the two were engaged. They married in October 2020 at their New York home. In August 2021, Johansson gave birth to their son.
Career
Jost served as a reporter and copy editor for the Staten Island Advance following graduation. Kappa Mikey was then hired as a writer for a short-lived Nickelodeon animated film. Since leaving his writing gig, he sent a writing packet to NBC's Saturday Night Live, which gave him a writing job in 2005.
Jost served as the SNL's writing manager from 2009 to 2012. He worked from 2012 to 2015 and regained control from 2017 to 2022. Rob Klein, a fellow SNL co-head writer, has often collaborated with him. Executive producer Lorne Michaels wondered if he'd be able to do the Weekend Update feature after the 2012-2013 season because co-anchor Seth Meyers will soon be back to host Late Night with Seth Meyers. On the March 1, 2014 episode, Jost accepted and switched Meyers. On the October 23, 2021, episode hosted by Jason Sudeikis, Jost tied for being the longest anchor in the segment's history.
With a tone Macdonald's that Jost grew up with in high school, Jost regards Norm Macdonald as a key influence for his Update anchor work. Tina Fey has also been mentioned as an influence. Jost made a brief cameo appearance as Ohio Governor John Kasich in a Republican presidential debate sketch, in addition to Weekend Update. During the 2021 NFL season, he later portrayed Pete Buttigieg during the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries and Roger Goodell.
Jost has appeared in a number of comedy roles. He has appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, TBS, and HBO. In 2009, he was selected as a "New Face" at the Montréal Just for Laughs festival, and he has since appeared at the Chicago Just for Laughs festival in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Montréal festival in 2010 and 2012. In The New Yorker magazine, Jost has written four "Shouts and Murmurs" pieces, as well as contributing to The New York Times, The Huffington Post, The Staten Island Advance, and Radar. He penned the screenplay and appeared in the 2015 comedy film Staten Island Summer, as Paul in the 2016 romcom film How to Be Single. At The Bell House in Brooklyn in January 2016, Jost opened for comedian Liam McEneaney's album release. Aaron Rodgers, a quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, appeared in an advertisement campaign for Izod in late 2018.
On Monday Night Raw's Monday Night Raw's March 4, 2019, Jost and Michael Cheney were announced as special correspondents for WrestleMania 35. They became involved in a storyline with wrestler Braun Strowman, resulting in Jost and Che's participation in the André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal in WrestleMania on March 4th. During the match, Jost and Che went under the rings for the majority of the game, and then attempted to kill Strowman while trying to do the same as the Hardy Boyz. Jost tried to calm the situation by using his therapist, but the two comedians were stunned and killed in rapid succession after losing the royal battle.
Jost published A Very Punchable Face: A Memoir in July 2020. The book was well-reced and made it to the New York Times Bestseller List.
