Coby Bell Career

Early life and career

Bell was born in Orange County, California, to a white mother and an African-American father, the Broadway actor Michel Bell. Bell attended San Jose State University, where he graduated with honors before beginning to act. He began his career with small roles, including The Parent 'Hood, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, ER, and Smart Guy before landing a thirteen-epistern stint as Patrick Owen in L.A. Doctors.

Bell landed the role of Officer Ty Davis, Jr. on the NBC drama Third Watch in 1999. He was one of the few original cast members to remain on the show for the entire six seasons on NBC. He co-starred in Safe, a critically acclaimed play co-written by Third Watch co-writer Anthony Ruivivar throughout the series' run. Jason Wiles and Yvonne Jung costarred in the performance. In a Third Watch edition of The Weakest Link's American version, he appeared.

Bell, a San Francisco firefighter who is based on Mona's mother, Phyllis (played by actress Telma Hopkins), found a recurring role on Half & Half in 2005, just months after Third Watch's demise. Despite being limited to only three episodes, Bell's character was discussed and referred to throughout the show's fourth and final season.

Bell appeared in and co-produced an independent film called Drifting Elegant in 2006. The project was his first as a producer. Bell appeared in an episode of the UPN comedy series Girlfriends that was also known as the pilot episode for the CW comedy-drama series of the same name. Jason Pitts, the captain of the fictional San Diego Sabers football team, appears on Bell. When The Game, which was cancelled in 2009, returned to BET in January 2011, he revived Jason Pitts in a regular role. Bell appeared on the USA Network's Burn Notice as a former counter-intelligence agent Jesse Porter in June 2010.

Bell was cast as Captain Larry James, a Texas Ranger Captain, in the CW western crime drama series Walker reboot, on February 28, 2020.
